Feb. 5: FSU Drops Two Games In Upper Peninsula
FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will battle the nationally-ranked Lake Superior State University Lakers this Thursday (Feb. 7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EST). FSU will then square off against the Northwood University Timberwolves in a conference contest this Saturday (Feb. 9) at 1 p.m. (EST) in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs will face the Grand Valley State University Lakers next Monday (Feb. 11) in GLIAC action with tipoff slated for 6 p.m. (EST) at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.
Last Week - Ferris State lost two conference games in Michigan's Upper Peninsula last weekend (Jan. 31 and Feb. 3). The Bulldogs dropped a 69-67 decision last Thursday (Jan. 31) to the Michigan Tech University Huskies at MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. FSU then fell 95-75 versus the Northern Michigan University Wildcats last Sunday (Feb. 3) in NMU's Berry Events Center at Marquette, Mich. Ferris is currently 11-8 overall and 7-5 in conference action. The Bulldogs rank 169th of 1,309 institutions (all levels) represented in the latest (Feb. 4) Dunkel Sports Research Index Women's Basketball Ratings. Ferris State is ranked seventh overall in the current (Jan. 30) Great Lakes Regional rankings. FSU currently is midst a three-game losing streak.
Brogger Posts Career Outing - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger nailed a career-high six three point baskets while tallying a personal-best 27 points at Michigan Tech. The 5-9 Brogger has attained double-figure scoring in 11 of the last 14 games and has 13 double-digit scoring performances this campaign. Brogger currently has made 82 career three-point field goals and ranks seventh on the all-time FSU list. She presently has 88 career assists and is 12 shy of notching her 100th career assist. Brogger currently ranks third in career free throw percentage (.827; 105-127) and eighth in career three-point field goal percentage (.343; 82-239). She is Ferris' fourth-leading scorer (13.2 ppg) to date this season.
Benear Has Big Day - Sophomore forward Stephanie Benear registered a career-best 11 points at Michigan Tech. The 5-9 Benear currently has scored 127 career points and needs 23 more to notch her 150th career point. Benear has started all 19 games this campaign and presently ranks as Ferris' sixth-leading scorer (4.2 ppg). She has reached double-figures (scoring) three times this season. Benear notched her 100th career rebound against the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals (Jan. 24) and currently has 108 career boards.
Horwitz Scoring Well - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz totaled a team-high 22 points while recording her 15th double-figure scoring performance this campaign at Northern Michigan. Horwitz presently has 46 career blocked shots and surpassed Dawn Baker (44; 1997-00) for third place on the all-time FSU list with three blocks at Michigan Tech. Her current 29 blocked shots this year presently ranks second on Ferris' single-season chart. Horwitz is currently eighth (.482; 199-413) on the school's career field goal percentage chart. She ranks as FSU's leading rebounder (8.9 rpg) and second-leading scorer (14.7 ppg) to date this season.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 67-36 (.650) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
Bulldog Bites - Senior guard Debbie Killips presently has 68 steals this campaign and needs one more to tie Ann Rienstra (69; 1988-89) and Valerie Scott (69; 1997-98) for fifth place on Ferris' single-season chart ....... Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin currently ranks second (.830; 127-153) on Ferris' career free throw percentage list ........ FSU's top four season-scoring leaders (Killips, Bridget Horwitz, Jennifer Brogger and DeMartin) have accounted for 78% (1,083-1,380) of the squad's total points this season .............. Sophomore guard Michelle Welch currently has 76 career points and is 24 points shy of notching her 100th career point ............ FSU head coach Tracey Fisk needs five more wins to tie Lori Hyman (72-86; 1989-95) for second place on the school's career coaching victory list ......... Killips currently ranks as Ferris' leading scorer (15.9 ppg) this campaign and the school's career steals leader (298). She has scored 943 career points to date and is 57 points shy of registering her 1,000th career point.
Against Lake Superior State - Thursday's contest marks the 62nd series meeting against Lake Superior State with the Lakers holding a 35-26 series advantage. FSU has won four of the last five series' contests. However, LSSU defeated Ferris State 64-63 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last meeting (Jan. 26, 2002). Ferris head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 4-3 versus LSSU. The Lakers are 17-2 overall and 11-2 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's contest. Lake Superior State is coached by fourth-year head coach Kris Bullock. Junior forward Alice Duesing, the older sister of FSU freshman forward Sarah Duesing, is presently LSSU's scoring leader (20.3 ppg) this season. Lake Superior State has won nine consecutive games to date and is ranked 23rd in the latest USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 poll.
Scouting Northwood - FSU and Northwood will square off for the 43rd time this Saturday at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 30-12 and have won 12 consecutive meetings. In the last series' meeting (Jan. 17, 2002), FSU posted a 65-53 victory at NU's Bennett Sports Center. Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current 7-0 career coaching mark versus Northwood. The Timberwolves are 6-14 overall and 2-11 in league play heading into this Thursday's game at Grand Valley State. Northwood is coached by Kelli Parker, who's in her second season at the helm. Sophomore center Leah Douglas is currently NU's season scoring leader (13.2 ppg). Northwood has lost eight of its last nine contests to date this campaign.
Versus Grand Valley State - FSU will face Grand Valley State for the 59th time next Monday with the Lakers holding a 41-17 series advantage. However, FSU has won five of the last seven contests and defeated the Lakers 80-74 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last meeting (Jan. 19, 2002). Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk currently has a 5-3 career coaching record versus GVSU. The Lakers are 11-9 overall and 5-7 in conference action heading into this Thursday's home game against Northwood and this Saturday's road contest at Lake Superior State. Junior guard Laurie Rehmann is GVSU's leading scorer (14.4 ppg) to date this season. The Lakers have presently won three-straight games this campaign and are coached by seventh-year head coach Claudette Charney.
