Dec. 31: Bulldogs Split Weekend Games; Upset Top-Ranked Norse

FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team returns to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action this Thursday (Jan. 3) as the Bulldogs travel to Hillsdale, Mich., to face the Hillsdale College Chargers at 6 p.m. (EST). FSU will then visit Wayne State University this Saturday (Jan. 5) for a 1 p.m. (EST) contest in Detroit, Mich. The Bulldogs are currently 6-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action.

Last Week - Ferris State split a pair of games against nationally-ranked opponents last weekend at Jim Wink Arena. FSU posted a 70-65 victory last Saturday (Dec. 29) against the Northern Kentucky University Norse, who are ranked first in the latest (Dec. 19) USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs dropped an 83-78 decision last Sunday (Dec. 30) versus the 10th-ranked University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles. Ferris State is ranked seventh in the latest (Dec. 19) NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings.

Killips Leading The Way - Senior point guard Debbie Killips presently has 268 career steals and ranks as FSU's all-time career steals leader. A second-team 2000-01 All-GLIAC North Division pick, Killips dished out a career-high 12 assists versus St. Joseph's College (Dec. 20). She currently has 349 career assists and is 15 assists away from Monta Ware (364; 1979-83), who is fourth on FSU's career assists chart. Killips has made 77 career three-point field goals to date and needs 11 more to tie Jen Newsone (88; 1998-00) for fifth place on the all-time FSU list. A 2001-02 FSU captain, Killips presently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (15.6 points per game). Killips currently ranks eighth in career field goal percentage (.471; 290-616), third in career three-point field goal percentage (.370; 77-208) and sixth in career free throw percentage (.781; 139-178) at Ferris State. Killips has led FSU in assists in each of the past five games.

Brogger Eighth On FSU List - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger has made 64 career three-point field goals to date and ranks eighth on the all-time FSU chart. The 5-9 Brogger has registered seven double-figure scoring outings this season and presently ranks as FSU's fourth-leading scorer (12.8 ppg). Brogger currently ranks ninth on FSU's career three-point field goal percentage chart (.333; 64-192). She tallied her 400th career point against Northern Kentucky and presently has scored 432 career points. Brogger has reached double-figures (scoring) in six of the past seven outings.

DeMartin Scores 400th Point - Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin registered her 400th career point against Southern Indiana and has tallied 405 career points to date. DeMartin presently ranks as FSU's second-leading scorer (14.4 ppg) this season and is second in career free throw percentage (.816; 93-114) at FSU. DeMartin notched her 50th career steal versus Northern Kentucky. She currently has 98 career rebounds and needs two more to notch her 100th career rebound.

Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 62-32 (.659) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

Bulldog Bites - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz currently has 28 career blocks and needs three more to tie Darlene Vondrasek (31; 1989-93) for eighth place on the FSU career blocks list ............... Sophomore forward Stephanie Benear grabbed her 75th career rebound against Northern Kentucky and presently has 78 career boards ......... Horwitz is FSU's third-leading scorer (13.4 ppg) and has registered nine double-figure scoring games this season ........... FSU's top four season scoring leaders (Debbie Killips, Lucy DeMartin, Horwitz and Jennifer Brogger) have accounted for 562 of the squad's 720 total points (78%) this year .............. Last Saturday's win over Northern Kentucky was FSU's first victory against the Norse ........... Killips has compiled seven double-figure scoring games this year and has led FSU in scoring five times ........... Benear presently has scored 86 career points and needs 14 more to register her 100th career point ............ Killips has 796 career points to date and is four points shy of recording her 800th career point ........... Sophomore forward Molly Potvin suffered a season-ending knee injury during a practice prior to the Christmas break and is scheduled to have surgery Jan. 9.

Against This Week's Foes - Ferris State holds a 28-14 series edge versus Hillsdale and is 24-23 all-time against Wayne State. Under head coach Tracey Fisk, the Bulldogs are 2-2 versus the Chargers and 4-0 against the Warriors. Last season (2000-01), Hillsdale defeated FSU 64-46 in Big Rapids (1/11/01) and pulled out a 78-75 double-overtime win (2/28/01) in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal round at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Mich. Ferris State beat Wayne State 81-74 in the only meeting between the two teams last year in Big Rapids (1/13/01). FSU is 13-7 all-time against the Chargers away from home and 7-14 versus the Warriors in Detroit. Hillsdale enters Thursday's contest with a 9-2 overall mark and a 1-1 conference record. Wayne State is 8-2 overall and 2-0 in league play heading into this Thursday's home game against Grand Valley State. FSU has won seven-straight meetings against Wayne State.

Home Sweet Home - Ferris State is presently 23-4 (.852) overall in three seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. The Bulldogs compiled a 127-125 overall mark in 24 seasons of action at the Old Jim Wink Arena (1974-98). FSU won its first 14 games in the new arena and was 9-0 at home during the inaugural 1999-2000 campaign. The Bulldogs are 4-2 at home this season.

Up Next - Ferris State will host the Ashland University Eagles next Saturday (Jan. 12) at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. (EST).
