Dec. 10: Bulldogs Improve to 3-2 Overall

FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will face the St. Francis College (Ind.) Cougars in a non-conference contest this Saturday (Dec. 15) in Fort Wayne, Ind. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs are currently 3-2 overall and 2-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action. The Cougars are a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II member and are presently 10-3 overall.

Last Week - Ferris State won its 2001-02 home opener at Jim Wink Arena last Thursday (Dec. 6) as the Bulldogs defeated the previously unbeaten Gannon University Knights 83-73 in GLIAC action. FSU won its second-consecutive contest last Saturday (Dec. 8) as the Bulldogs beat the Mercyhurst College Lakers 90-69 at Jim Wink Arena. Senior Debbie Killips scored a career-high 28 points in the win over Gannon while sophomore Lucy DeMartin totaled a personal-best 24 points versus Mercyhurst.

DeMartin Earns Honor - Lucy DeMartin has been named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week (Dec. 10) for her performance last week. DeMartin scored 19 points, had seven rebounds and three steals versus Gannon and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals against the Lakers. DeMartin registered her 300th career point in last Thursday's win over Gannon and presently has scored 332 career points in 32 games (10.4 points per game). She currently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (14.2 ppg) and has posted four-consecutive double-figure scoring outings to date.

During the 2000-01 campaign, DeMartin was FSU's third-leading scorer with 261 points in 27 games (9.7 ppg). The 5-9 DeMartin tallied her 100th career made field goal against the University of Findlay (Nov. 29) and has a career field goal percentage of .421 (120-285). DeMartin currently has 48 career steals and is two shy of registering her 50th career steal. She has 72 career rebounds to date and needs 28 more to record her 100th career rebound.

Killips Continues Climb - Point guard Debbie Killips has 245 career steals to date and is eight thefts away from tying FSU's all-time leader Valerie Scott (253; 1994-97). The 5-7 Killips presently has 314 career assists and surpassed Vicki Williams (311; 1979-83) to move into fifth place on the all-time FSU chart with six assists against Mercyhurst. Killips is 50 assists away from Monta Ware (364; 1979-83), who is fourth on the FSU career list. A 2000-01 FSU captain, Killips registered her 700th career point against Mercyhurst and currently ranks as FSU's second-leading scorer (13.2 ppg).

Horwitz Ranks Among Leaders - Sophomore Bridget Horwitz had two blocks against Mercyhurst and moved into a tie for ninth place on the FSU career chart. The 6-2 Horwitz presently has 23 career blocks and needs eight more to tie Darlene Vondrasek (31; 1989-93) for eighth place. Horwitz compiled 14 points and seven rebounds against the Lakers. She has registered four double-figure scoring games this season and is currently FSU's leading rebounder (9.0 rebounds per game) and third-leading scorer (12.2 ppg).

Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 59-30 (.663) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 2000-01 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

Bulldog Bites - With last Thursday's win over Gannon, FSU has now won three-straight home-opening games ........... Junior Jennifer Brogger has made 54 career three-point field goals to date and needs five more to tie Ann Rienstra (59; 1986-89) for 10th place on the all-time FSU chart ........... Bridget Horwitz scored her 250th career point against Mercyhurst ......... Freshman Kari Searles tallied eight points in her Bulldog debut last Saturday .......... Sophomore Stephanie Benear tied a personal career-high with six rebounds against both Gannon and Mercyhurst ........... Sophomore Molly Potvin presently has 98 career points and is two shy of registering her 100th career point ........... Debbie Killips currently has made 66 career three-point field goals and needs two more to tie Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for sixth place on the all-time FSU list ............. Brogger is currently 10th on FSU's career three-point field goal percentage chart (.331; 54-163) .......... Killips presently ranks eighth in career field goal percentage (.471; 257-546), fifth in career three-point field goal percentage (.367; 66-180) and fifth in career free throw percentage (.778; 126-162) at Ferris State.

Classic Up Next - Ferris State will host the first annual GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Classic next Wednesday and Thursday (Dec. 19-20) at Jim Wink Arena. Participating teams include the Lake Superior State University Lakers, the St. Joseph's College (Ind.) Pumas and the Bellarmine University (Ky.) Knights. Lake Superior State will face St. Joseph's in next Wednesday's classic opener at 5 p.m. (EST). FSU will host Bellarmine at 7 p.m. (EST). Bellarmine and Lake Superior State will square off in next Thursday's first game at 5 p.m. (EST). In the final game next Thursday, the Bulldogs will host St. Joseph's at 7 p.m. (EST).

Playing Well at Home - Ferris State improved to 21-2 (.913) overall in three seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena with two wins last week. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU won its first 14 games in the new arena and was 9-0 at home during the inaugural 1999-2000 campaign.

Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4. Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more.

Against St. Francis - Ferris State and St. Francis College will square off for the first time this Saturday at the 3,000-seat Hutzell Athletic Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Cougars have made five-straight NAIA Division II Elite Eight appearances and are a member of the Mid-Central Conference. St. Francis is coached by first-year head coach Gary Andrews. The Cougars are 0-2 this season against NCAA Division II schools and have lost two of their past three games.
