Dec. 3: Bulldogs Open 2001-02 Home Campaign
FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will host the Gannon University Knights in its 2001-02 home opener this Thursday (Dec. 6) night at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. (EST). FSU will then host the Mercyhurst College Lakers this Saturday (Dec. 8) at 3 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs are currently 1-2 overall and 0-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.
Last Week - Ferris State lost its 2001-02 GLIAC opener against the University of Findlay Oilers 54-40 last Thursday (Nov. 29) evening in Findlay, Ohio. The Bulldogs led by six points (13-7) early in the first half before being held scoreless for the final 13:47 of the opening period. Sophomore Bridget Horwitz led the Bulldogs with 11 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Lucy DeMartin added 10 points while senior Debbie Killips chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.
Horwitz On Top of Her Game - Forward Bridget Horwitz ranks as FSU's leading scorer (14.3 points per game) and leading rebounder (11.3 rebounds per game) after three games.
The 6-2 Horwitz has registered three double-figure scoring performances and has led the Bulldogs in scoring twice this season. She currently has 20 career blocks and needs two more to tie Julie Anthony (22; 1994-98) for 10th place on the all-time FSU list.
Horwitz scored a career-high 18 points and tallied a personal-best 14 rebounds to notch her first career double-double (points and rebounds) against Presbyterian College (S.C.) at the Chatham Orthopaedics Tipoff Classic (Nov. 16) in Savannah, Ga. She added 14 points and 14 rebounds as FSU posted its first victory of the season versus Armstrong Atlantic State (Nov. 17). In last Thursday's game at Findlay, Horwitz totaled 11 points and six rebounds.
Killips Moving Up Charts - Point guard Debbie Killips has 238 career steals to date and is 15 thefts away from surpassing FSU's all-time leader Valerie Scott (1994-97), who registered 253 career steals. The 5-7 Killips presently has 304 career assists and needs seven more to move past Vicki Williams (311; 1979-83) into fifth place on the school chart. A 2001-02 FSU team captain, Killips is 29 points away from scoring her 700th career point. She currently has 671 career points in 87 career outings (7.7 points per game). Killips is FSU's second-leading scorer (10.3 points per game) this season.
DeMartin Posting Solid Numbers - Lucy DeMartin currently has 289 career points and is 11 points away from registering her 300th career point. DeMartin is averaging 9.3 points per game and has scored in double-figures in each of the past two games. During the 2000-01 campaign, DeMartin was FSU's third-leading scorer with 261 points in 27 games (9.7 ppg). The 5-9 DeMartin tallied her 100th career made field goal against Findlay and has a career field goal percentage of .422 (103-244).
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 57-30 (.655) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 2000-01 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
Bulldog Bites - Junior Jennifer Brogger has made 52 career three-point field goals to date and needs seven more to tie Ann Rienstra (59, 1986-89) for 10th place on the all-time FSU chart .......... Debbie Killips sank her 62nd career three-point field goal at Findlay to tie Amp Popielarz (62; 1999-00) for seventh place on the all-time FSU chart ............. FSU fell to 1-4 all-time versus Findlay with last Thursday's loss ........... Bridget Horwitz currently has 240 career points and is 10 points away from scoring her 250th career point ........... Sophomore Molly Potvin presently has scored 88 career points and is 12 points shy of registering her 100th career point .............. Killips presently ranks fifth in career free throw percentage (.783; 123-157), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.376; 62-165) and eighth in field goal percentage (.473; 243-514) at Ferris State ........... Brogger is currently 10th on FSU's career three-point field goal percentage chart (.331; 52-157) ............... FSU was picked to finish fourth in the 2001-02 GLIAC Preseason Women's Basketball North Division Coaches Poll ........... Sophomore Stephanie Benear had a career-best six rebounds at Findlay.
Against This Week's Opponents - Ferris State and Gannon will square off for the eighth time this Thursday night. The Bulldogs own a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series, which began during the 1995-96 campaign. FSU has won four of the past five meetings. The Knights have never won in Big Rapids (0-2). Ferris State is 5-2 all-time versus Mercyhurst and has won five of the past six contests. The Lakers recorded their second series victory last season with a 71-70 win in Erie, Pa. Mercyhurst is 0-3 all-time in Big Rapids. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk is 3-1 versus Gannon and 2-1 against Mercyhurst. Gannon enters Thursday's contest with a 4-0 overall mark. Mercyhurst, coached by former Bulldog assistant Bo Kuntz, is currently 1-2 overall heading into this Monday's (Dec. 3) contest against Columbia Union College (Md.) and Thursday's game at Grand Valley.
Tough at Home - Entering this Thursday's contest against Gannon, Ferris State has an all-time mark of 19-2 (.905) in two seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU won its first 14 games in the new arena and was 9-0 at home during the inaugural 1999-2000 campaign.
Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4. Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more.
Next Week - Ferris State will face the University of St. Francis (Ind.) Cougars next Saturday, Dec. 15, at 5 p.m. (EST) in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Bulldogs will host the GLIAC/Great Lakes Valley Conference Classic Dec. 19-20 at Jim Wink Arena.
