April 21: 2001-02 Ferris State Women's Basketball Award Winners Announced
Ferris State University women’s basketball senior guard Debbie Killips was selected the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2001-02 season during the program’s annual awards banquet Saturday (April 20) afternoon at the Wheeler Pavilion on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich.
Killips, who was a first-team 2001-02 Verizon Women’s Basketball College Division Academic All-America selection and a second-team 2001-02 Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region honoree, was also presented with the squad’s Hardest Worker Award. A three-time (2000-02) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division All-Defensive Team pick, Killips recorded a team-best 92 steals and 129 assists in 26 outings while posting the school’s ninth-best single-season scoring output (402 points; 15.5 ppg) and registering 20 double-figure scoring performances this season. The FSU co-captain concluded her four-year career as the school’s all-time steals leader (322), placed third in assists (429), third in made three-point field goals (109-295) and eighth in field goals made (381-839). The 5-7 Killips tallied 1,042 career points in a school-record 110 career outings (9.5 ppg) while becoming the ninth player in FSU history to score 1,000 career points. A 2001-02 GLIAC North Division First-Teamer, Killips finished her career ranked seventh in free throw percentage (.788; 171-217) and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (.369) on the school's career charts.
Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin received the Defensive MVP Award. The second-team 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV recipient placed second among the team’s free throw percentage (.853; 93-109) leaders and third in scoring (14.2 ppg) this past season. Her 93 made free throws was Ferris’ sixth-best single-season performance while her .853 percentage represents the program’s fifth-best seasonal mark.
The Sixth Player Award was presented to junior forward Jennifer Brogger for the second consecutive season. Brogger averaged a personal career-high 12.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in 26 contests this season while recording the school’s second-best single-season free throw percentage mark (.889; 64-72). Freshman forward Sarah Duesing received both the Rookie-of-the-Year Award and the Most Improved Player Award. Duesing scored 38 points and grabbed 39 rebounds while starting six games this campaign.
Ferris State recognized four GLIAC All-Academic selections in DeMartin, Killips, sophomore guard Stephanie Benear and sophomore center Bridget Horwitz. Killips also received the Joan Nelson Academic Award for holding the squad’s highest combined grade point average (gpa) over the previous two semesters while DeMartin was presented the President’s Academic Award for recording the program’s highest cumulative gpa.
Ferris State concluded the 2001-02 season with a 14-12 overall mark under fourth-year head coach Tracey Fisk. FSU compiled a fourth-place (North Division) 11-7 GLIAC record and reached the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal round for the third consecutive campaign. The Bulldogs lose only one senior in Killips from this season’s squad.
