2002-03 RECRUITS
May 2, 2002: FSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM ADDS PREP STANDOUT
Kara Gallert Inks National Letter-Of-Intent To Join Program
Prep basketball standout Kara Gallert (Wyoming/Park) (pronounced GAL-ert) has committed to attend and play women’s basketball at Ferris State University, beginning with the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by fourth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk.
“Kara is a skilled player who penetrates well,” Fisk said. “She wants to be a Bulldog and has the desire to contend for a starting spot.”
A 5-6 guard, Gallert led Wyoming Park High School to both a district championship and regional tournament berth during the 2001 campaign. She averaged 15 points, five assists and four rebounds per game while earning fifth-team 2001 Detroit Free Press Class B All-State accolades.
“I was impressed with her perimeter skills,” Fisk said. “When she came and worked out with us, she played with a lot of confidence and had an unselfish attitude. She has the ability to penetrate and get to the basket, but she also dishes the ball well and can find open players.”
A four-year letterwinner, Gallert received first-team 2001 Associated Press Class B All-State honors and was a three-time (1999-2001) All-Ottawa-Kent (OK) Gold Conference selection. Coached by Rich Pullen, Gallert earned team Most Valuable Player honors three-straight seasons (1999-01) and twice served as team captain. The 2001 Grand Rapids Press Dream Team pick was the OK Gold Conference’s leading scorer two consecutive (2000-01) seasons.
“She’s quick with the ball and can penetrate right or left,” Fisk said. “She worked hard throughout the recruiting process and was very persistent in catching our eye, which she obviously did.”
As a junior (2000), Gallert tallied 16 points, five steals and four assists per contest while garnering honorable mention Detroit Free Press Class B All-State kudos and second-team Grand Rapids Press All-Area recognition. She was twice (1999-200) named Wyoming Park’s Best Defensive Player Award recipient and attained fourth-team 2000 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan All-State honors. Her cousins, Brooke and Brianne Gallert, played collegiate women’s basketball at NCAA Division I Western Michigan (1998-2001).
The daughter of Ron and Barb Gallert, Kara joins Mary Brown (Benton Harbor/Lake Michigan Catholic), Kelly McLaughlin (Clare), and Darcie Philp (Ubly) as 2002-03 FSU women’s basketball recruits.
Ferris State finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark. The Bulldogs placed fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (GLIAC) North Division with an 11-7 record.
