2002-03 RECRUITS
May 1, 2002: FERRIS STATE SIGNS PREP BASKETBALL PLAYER MARY BROWN
Four-Time All-Conference Pick Is FSU’s Newest Women’s Basketball Recruit
The Ferris State University women’s basketball program has signed guard/forward Mary Brown (Benton Harbor/Lake Michigan Catholic) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s basketball at FSU, starting in the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by fourth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk.
“Mary is a proven winner who knows how to play the game,” Fisk said. “She’s very versatile and uses her body well. I expect her to come in and compete for a starting position.”
The 5-8 Brown averaged 14 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as a senior during the 2001 campaign while leading Lake Michigan Catholic to a 26-1 overall mark and a Class D state semifinal round appearance for the second consecutive season. The four-time (1998-01) first-team All-Red Arrow Conference pick garnered first-team 2001 Class D All-State accolades from the Detroit Free Press, Detroit News, Associated Press and the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
As a senior, Brown scored 380 points, grabbed 266 rebounds and registered 160 steals while leading Lake Michigan Catholic to its third straight regional championship. She started 100 of 102 contests during her prep career.
“Mary is strong enough both physically and mentally to make a significant impact next year,” Fisk said. “She’s deceivingly quick and is not afraid to get in there and mix it up. Throughout her career, she led her team to outstanding records which demonstrates her ability to bring out the best in her teammates.
“She’s ready to play at this level and really liked our team,” added Fisk.
A four-year letterwinner, Brown tallied 1,256 points, 963 rebounds and 422 steals during her prep career. She led the Lakers to a 94-8 overall career mark, four conference championships and three district titles. A two-time (2000-01) Class D All-State Academic honoree, Brown was prepped by Joe Jarvie. She twice (2000-01) received Class D All-State Track and Field accolades and was a first-team 2001 all-conference volleyball recipient. Besides athletics, Brown has been involved in the school’s Youth to Youth program, Student Government and the Marching and Symphonic Band.
The daughter of John and Peggy Brown, Mary plans to major in graphic design at Ferris State. She joins Kelly McLaughlin (Clare), and Darcie Philp (Ubly) as 2002-03 FSU women’s basketball recruits.
Ferris State concluded the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark, which included a fourth-place (North Division) 11-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) finish.
