JAN. 3, 2002: FERRIS STATE SIGNS TWO WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYERS
A Center and Forward Ink With The Bulldogs During Early Signing Period
Ferris State University women's basketball head coach Tracey Fisk has announced the signing of post player Darcie Philp (Ubly) and forward Kelly McLaughlin (Clare) to national letters-of-intent to attend and play women's basketball at FSU, beginning in the 2002-03 academic year.
"Both Darcie and Kelly are talented offensive players," Fisk said. "Their addition will give us added size and create depth in the post area. They are both capable scorers who come from successful high school programs and have the ability to develop well in our program."
Philp, a 6-1 center, averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game this past season at Ubly High School while attaining second-team 2001 Detroit Free Press Class C All-State accolades. A three-year (1999-2001) Bearcat Most Valuable Player, Philp earned first-team Greater Thumb Conference (GTC) honors twice (2000-2001) and finished her three-year varsity career as Ubly's all-time career scoring leader (964 points). Prepped by Jeanne Gusa, Philp was a three-year (1999-2001) GTC Scholar Athlete Award recipient and a 2001 Huron Daily Tribune First Team All-Area selection. She averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds per game as a junior (2000) and totaled 19 20-plus point games during her prep career. A third-team 2001 Detroit News Class C All-State pick, Philp earned three varsity letters apiece in basketball, volleyball and track and field. She plans to major in social work at Ferris State.
"Darcie is a left-handed player who can put the ball on the floor," Fisk said. "She has a nice mid-range jumper and is a good passer who will give us added options on the offensive end. We're not a big team this year, so she will have the opportunity to come in and earn quality playing time right away."
A 6-0 forward, McLaughlin led Clare High School to a school-record 18-4 overall mark and a second consecutive Jack Pine Conference (JPC) Championship during the 2001 campaign. The 2001 Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun Player of the Year, McLaughlin received fifth-team 2001 Detroit Free Press Class C All-State recognition and honorable mention 2001 Detroit News Class C All-State kudos. McLaughlin, who was the JPC's 2001 leading scorer (16.8 points per game), became Clare's all-time career rebounding leader (738 rebounds) while averaging 11 rebounds per game as a senior. A 2001 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Academic All-State honoree, McLaughlin was both a three-time team Most Valuable Player and All-JPC selection. A four-year (1998-2001) National Honor Society member, McLaughlin plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State.
"Kelly is a versatile player with a solid outside shot," Fisk said. "She moves her feet extremely well, which will help her adjust to the quickness of the collegiate game. Her addition will allow us to move some of our current players to their natural positions and give us a more balanced look."
