The Ferris State University women’s basketball program maintained its in-state recruiting ties with the signing of Lindsey Kohn (Belding, Mich.) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s basketball at FSU, beginning with the 2000-2001 season as announced by third-year head coach Tracey Fisk.

“Lindsey is a great addition to our program,” Fisk said. “Her athleticism will allow her to be utilized at both backcourt (point and shooting guard) positions. She’s a very capable scorer along with being a talented ballhandler and passer.

“Lindsey has enjoyed a lot of success in high school because of her competitiveness and commitment which she will bring with her to the collegiate level. She possesses outstanding quickness and raw skills,” added Fisk.

Kohn, a 5-6 guard, was an all-state honorable mention selection and the O-K Gold Conference’s Player-of-the-Year this season under coach Mark Youngs after leading Belding to a 14-10 overall record and its first-ever district championship title in the program’s history. In the Lady Redskins’ regional semifinal loss to Lansing Catholic Central, she set a single-game school record for most three-point field goals with six treys. A three-time O-K Gold All-Conference selection, Kohn averaged a team-high 17.3 points per contest while shooting 43.8 % from the floor, including 32.6 % from beyond the arch. She also averaged 5.4 assists, 3.2 steals, and 2.9 rebounds a game while connecting on 78.8 % of her free throw attempts.

Her other prep accolades include being named the school’s female athlete-of-the-year for the 1999-2000 season and being selected The Greenville Daily News’ Girls’ Basketball Player-of-the-Year. She was also honored as the team’s MVP and was an all-area dream team pick. A four-year starter, Kohn concluded her career as the school’s all-time leader in three-point field goals made (132), 11th best in the state, along with assists (312), steals (237) and varsity games played (85) The three-year captain also holds season marks for three-point field goals made (49) and assists (128).

As a junior, Kohn posted averages of 9.8 points, 4.3 assists and 3.3 steals an outing en route to being a first-team all-area honoree for the second straight season. In her sophomore campaign, she averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 assists and 2.9 steals per contest en route to attaining all-country honorable mention kudos and was a nominated for the Ionia County Female Athlete-of-the-Year Award. Kohn was an all-area second-team performer as a freshman in 1996 after compiling averages of 8.0 points, 3.2 assists and 2.6 steals a game while also tying the school single-season record for most three-point field goals made with 31 total.

Kohn, the daughter of Michael and Deborah Kohn, is a two-time all-conference performer in golf and a school record holder in track. Academically, Kohn holds membership in the National Honor Society, Varsity Club, Student Council and Business Professionals of America.

BULLDOGS LAND LANSING CATHOLIC STANDOUT MOLLY POTVIN

The Ferris State University women’s basketball program has added another talented prep student-athlete to its list of recruits this season as forward Molly Potvin (Lansing, Mich./Catholic Central) has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s basketball at FSU, starting with the 2000-2001 season. The announcement was made by third-year head coach Tracey Fisk.

“Molly is a welcome addition to our program,” said Fisk. “She comes from a highly-successful (high school) program, is well coached and has a good knowledge of the game. I believe she’s capable of stepping in this upcoming season and making a contribution for us.”

The 5-10 Potvin averaged 13.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 3.6 steals, and 1.0 blocked shots per game in her senior year for head coach Paul Cook as LCCHS compiled a 17-8 overall record. A three-time All-Capital Circuit League honoree, Potvin was a member of the Lansing Area’s Class B Team and was selected the Cougars’ Most Valuable Player in 1999. The team captain also received the team’s Rebounding Award for the fourth straight season and was awarded the squad’s Free Throw Award for the third consecutive campaign.

A four-time state all-academic selection, Potvin earned all-state honorable mention laurels in 1998 as a result of averaging 11.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.8 steals as LCCHS went 18-6 overall. As a sophomore, she scored 11.3 points per game to go along with 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.4 steals an outing while leading the Cougars to a 22-2 overall mark.

A four-year varsity team starter, Potvin holds school records for most career points (1,063), rebounds (776), free throws (270), games played (97), and minutes played (2,160). She also played an integral role in guiding the Cougars to four regional championship appearances, four district crowns, and two conference championship titles.

Besides being a four-year letterwinner in basketball, Potvin also lettered four seasons (1997-00) in softball and two (1999-00) in volleyball. She’s a member of the Spanish Club, National Honor Society, Student Senate, and the Ambassadors Public Representatives organization.

“Molly has the versatility to play both forward positions,” Fisk said. “Her size is an asset. She’s a capable scorer who handles the basketball well.”

Potvin, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Lee Sanford-Potvin, plans to major in visual communications/advertising at FSU.

FRONTCOURT STAR BRIDGET HORWITZ SIGNS WITH FERRIS STATE

The Ferris State University women’s basketball program added depth in its frontcourt with the addition of Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb), who recently signed a national letter-of-intent to attend and play women’s basketball at FSU, starting with the 2000-2001 season. The announcement was made by third-year head coach Tracey Fisk.

“We are excited Bridget has chosen to be a Bulldog,” said Fisk. “She’s a hard worker and I believe she will be able to contribute in a lot of ways. She’s well-suited to our up-tempo style of play because she’s very agile for a post player and runs the floor well.

“Bridget possesses great hands, which is important at the collegiate level, and she finds ways to put the ball into the basket,” added Fisk.

As a senior this season at DeKalb High School in Waterloo, Ind., the 6-2 forward-center averaged team highs in points (15.1 ppg.), rebounds (8.1 rpg.), and blocked shots (2.6) while helping lead coach Mark Rohm’s team to not only a 20-2 overall record, but the Northeast Hoosier Conference (NHC) Regular Season Championship and the NHC Tournament title as well. Horwitz, a two-time all-conference first-team performer, garnered first-team all-area accolades as a senior. She also earned Journal Gazette Player-of-the-Week and 21 Alive Player-of-the-Week honors during her final prep campaign.

Besides basketball, Horwitz also participated in cross country and track at DHS. She plans to major in psychology at FSU.

Horwitz comes from an athletic family as her older sister, Carolyn, presently is a member of the NCAA Division I University of Kansas’ women’s swimming team and completed her sophomore year this last winter.

Ferris State is coming off of its most successful season in the program’s 26-year history as the Bulldogs were 22-7 overall for the 1999-2000 season, which included a 16-3 (first-place tie) mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s North Division. FSU also set a school record for victories in a single season (22) and made its first-ever NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance.
