The Lake Superior State University women's basketball team used an early first-half run to take control and held on to beat the Ferris State University women's basketball squad 67-52 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Thursday (Jan. 8) evening at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

After FSU scored the opening basket of the contest, the Lakers answered with a 15-0 run en route to a 29-23 halftime advantage. FSU was able to trim the deficit to four points with 10:37 to play but could get no closer in dropping their first league game since a Dec. 14 home loss to Findlay.

LSSU was paced by Jaclyn Armstrong's game-high 22 points in the win. Alyssa VanderWal added 15 points, 12 rebounds and six blocked shots in the triumph while Emily Joseph netted 14 points for the Lakers.

Caitlin Hutchison was the lone Bulldog player to reach double-figure scoring with 13 points as FSU managed to shoot only 25% (17-68) from the floor for the game and was five-of-25 (20%) beyond the three-point line.

The Lakers, who improved to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in league play with the victory, shot 42.6% (20-47) from the field and sank four-of-12 (33.3%) three-point tries. LSSU made 23-of-29 (79.3%) free throws while FSU was 13-of-17 (76.5%) at the charity stripe.

FSU owned a 42-40 rebounding edge and came up with 19 offensive boards, but turned the ball over 13 times compared to only 11 for the Lakers in dropping to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in conference action.

The Bulldogs continue their two-game league road swing by visiting Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Jan. 10) for a 1 p.m. (EST) game in University Center, Mich. FSU then returns home to begin a five-game homestand against rival Grand Valley State in a "Big Monday" matchup next Monday evening (Jan. 12) with tipoff set for 6 p.m. (EST) at Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.
