CAITLIN HUTCHISON EARNS FIRST-TEAM ACADEMIC DISTRICT LAURELS

Senior Honored By ESPN The Magazine For Academic & Athletic Efforts

Senior guard/forward Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview) of the 2008-09 Ferris State University women’s basketball team was recently recognized as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball First Team selection.

Hutchison was among seven representatives from a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member school named any of the District IV teams (first, second, third) selected in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Three other league standouts also earned first-team laurels in addition to Hutchison's recognition. Six players were honored on the first team, the second team had four selections and the third team featured six student-athletes. By earning first-team laurels, Hutchison is now eligible to receive Academic All-America kudos.

Student-athletes must have reached at least sophomore status academically, maintain a 3.3 cumulative grade point average and also be a starter or key reserve for their team to be nominated. The District IV team is comprised of colleges and universities located in the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama.

A three-time GLIAC All-Academic Team selection, Hutchison currently has tallied 482 career points and needs only 18 more to post her 500th career point at FSU. She's also grabbed 222 rebounds and dished out 91 assists in 83 career contests while starting 44 games. The 5-10 Hutchison ranks among the school's career field goal percentage leaders to date as she's connected on 191 of 404 (.473) career attempts.

Presently this year, Hutchison ranks as the squad's third-leading scorer (8.5 ppg.) and has started 17 of 22 outings. She's also listed seventh among the GLIAC's leaders in field goal percentage (.518) this campaign. In 2007-08, Hutchison palyed in 29 games and reached double-figure scoring 11 times to finish as the team's third-leading scorer (8.7 ppg.) and fourth-leading rebounder (4.0 rpg.). She saw action in 17 contests as FSU advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen during the 2006-07 season.

This year marks the 57th anniversary of the Academic All-America program, which was founded by CoSIDA in 1952 to recognize collegiate student-athletes for their outstanding achievements in the classroom and on the playing field. Over the years, the program has grown into one of the most recognized and prestigious collegiate scholar-athlete awards nationwide, honoring student-athletes from all NCAA championship sports. This season marks ESPN The Magazine's fifth year of sponsoring the Academic All-America program, which was formerly endorsed by both GTE and Verizon.

The 2008-09 campaign represents the 10th consecutive season in which Ferris State has had a player named to either the Academic All-District IV First or Second Team. Former player Jen Newsone was a second team pick (2000-01) before both Debbie Killips (2000-01, 2001-02) and Lucy DeMartin (2002-03, 2003-04) became two-time first team honorees. FSU's Bridget Horwitz earned first-team distinction in 2004-05 before Erin Miller garnered identical laurels in 2005-06. In 2006-07, both Rachel Folcik and Miller were second-team all-district honorees.

Last season (2007-08), Folcik attained first-team district status and went on to join both Killips and DeMartin as Academic All-America First Team honorees. Killips received the honor during the 2001-02 campaign and DeMartin claimed the recognition in 2003-04.

Ferris State will play its final two regular-season home contests at Wink Arena this week as the Bulldogs host Saginaw Valley State on Thursday, Feb. 19, with the league tipoff and “Pink Wave Night” encounter set for 6 p.m. (EST). The Bulldog men's and women's basketball teams and staff will wear special pink attire, including shoelaces and shooting shirts to help support breast cancer during the doubleheader.

FSU then takes on Lake Superior State in its annual “Senior Day” contest on Saturday, Feb. 21, starting at 1 p.m. (EST) in Big Rapids. Hutchison and the rest of Ferris' senior class will be honored following their final home outings at Wink Arena on Saturday.

Tickets for both of this week's games will be available at the door starting one hour prior to tipoff.
