|FSU Head Coach Tracey Dorow talks with reporters during Thursday's GLIAC Basketball Media Day Teleconference at Jim Wink Arena|
The Ferris State University women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the 2008-09 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball North Division Preseason Poll, which was announced Thursday (Oct. 30) during the league's second annual media day teleconference.
Ferris head coach Tracey Dorow was joined by local media representatives inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena for the teleconference and media members had an opportunity to conduct one-on-one interviews following the call.
The poll was chosen for the second year in a row by selected members of the media and the GLIAC's Sports Information Directors. The 30-member group tabbed Michigan Tech and Hillsdale to win the conference's North and South Division titles, respectively.
The Bulldogs totaled 121 points in the balloting and trailed Michigan Tech's 179 points and second place Grand Valley State's 134 points in the North Division. The Huskies earned 29 of a possible 30 first-place votes with GVSU earning the final top vote.
Hillsdale received 25 first-place votes in the South Division en route to a 174-point effort with Northwood taking two divisional top votes and 137 points overall in placing second. Ashland finished third with 132 points and the remaining three first-place votes.
In addition to the preseason media poll, the league also released a Preseason All-GLIAC Team, which was chosen by the conference's head coaches. FSU senior guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) was among five individuals named to the North Division team. Hillsdale's Katie Cezat claimed Preseason Player of the Year Award laurels.
"I'm excited to get the season underway again and I think we'll be a balanced team this year," said Dorow, who will embark on her 11th season at the helm. "We'll be a different team this year without Rachel Folcik, but we have four players returning with significant starting experience so that should help us."
The Ferris State women's basketball squad, which advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history two years ago, wrapped up the 2007-08 season with a 17-12 overall record and placed tied for third in the GLIAC North Division with a 11-7 league mark. The Bulldogs return nine letterwinners and four starters this season.
FSU will host West Michigan opponent Hope College in exhibition play Tuesday, Nov. 11, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The women's basketball team officially starts its season in the Kentucky Wesleyan Lady Panther Classic on Nov. 15-16 in Owensboro, Ky. Ferris squares off against host Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday (Nov. 15) at 4:15 p.m. (EST) and will then take on Indianapolis Sunday (Nov. 16) in a 2 p.m. (EST) contest.
