FERRIS' RACHEL FOLCIK CLAIMS ALL-GLIAC FIRST TEAM LAURELS

Senior Also Tabbed To GLIAC All-Defensive Team For Second-Straight Year

Senior All-America forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) of the 2007-08 Ferris State University women’s basketball team was named to both the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division First Team along with the GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team squad for the second consecutive year as announced Thursday (March 6) evening by league representatives in conjunction with the GLIAC Tournament Banquet in Houghton, Mich.

Rachel Folcik Folcik was one of two North Division players to attain both first team recognition and all-defensive team kudos in addition to Northwood's Megan Starnes. Hillsdale's Katie Cezat was tabbed as the GLIAC Player of the Year while Amy Achesinski of Mercyhurst garnered Freshman of the Year honors and Northwood's Jeff Curtis was named Coach of the Year in voting by the league's 13 respective head coaches.

Folcik currently ranks second in school history with 1,701 career points and is only 20 shy of tying Lucy DeMartin's school-record total of 1,721 points at FSU. The 6-1 Folcik, who was chosen as this year’s GLIAC Preseason Player of the Year, currently has a school-record 675 career made field goals and is listed second with 790 rebounds all-time at Ferris State. This season, Folcik currently ranks as the squad's leading scorer (20.1 ppg) and rebounder (8.5 rpg) despite missing the last two regular-season games with an injury. She's reached double-figure scoring in 25 of her 26 contests while posting 12 double-double (points & rebounds) efforts this campaign. The 2006-07 NCAA Division II Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American was named to both the All-GLIAC North Division and All-Great Lakes Region First Teams last year. Earlier this year, she was chosen as an ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-America First Team pick.

Folcik presently is second in the GLIAC in scoring (20.1 ppg.) along with tied for second in free throw percentage (.833) and third in rebounding (8.5 rpg.) to date. Nationally, she ranks 17th in scoring, according to the most recent NCAA-II National Statistics. She's totaled 81 double-figure scoring games in 112 career contests as a Bulldog player to date. Also, Folcik has scored 20 points or more 12 times in 2007-08 with three games of 30 points or more.

As a junior last season, Folcik led the Bulldogs to a school-record 23 wins (23-9) and the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. Folcik’s 241 made field goals and 602 total points last season were both school single-season marks while her 261 rebounds was the second-highest seasonal figure in FSU history. The two-time team captain, who averaged a team-best 18.8 points per game, scored in double-figures 27 times last year and notched 13 double-double (points & rebounds) performances. Folcik also averaged a squad-best 8.2 rebounds per game last campaign. She finished the year listed second overall in scoring and fifth in rebounds among the GLIAC’s overall leaders while ranking second in both field goal (.555) and free throw (.860) percentage.

The Ferris women's basketball squad will square off against Ashland in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals Friday (March 7) evening inside Michigan Tech University’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. (EST). The winner advances to play either host MTU or fourth-seeded Wayne State in Saturday's (March 8) league championship game beginning at 7 p.m. (EST).
