FSU Basketball At A Glance: The Ferris State women’s basketball team concludes non-league play by hosting Marygrove College Thursday, Feb. 22, in a 6 p.m. (EST) game at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs then take on nationally-ranked archrival and defending NCAA-II National Champion Grand Valley State in the regular-season finale Saturday (Feb. 24) evening at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game tips off at 5:30 p.m. (EST).
Media Coverage: Both games will be carried live by Bulldog Radio, which can be heard locally on television Channel 21 both via on-campus cable and Charter Communications in Mecosta County. The live audio only webcast of both games will be offered at www.bulldogradio.org. A live video and audio webcast will be available through B2 Networks for a charge of $6 on FSU’s Athletics Website at www.ferris.edu/sports. Tickets are $7 (general admission) or $10 (reserved) for adults along with $5 for students (K-12) or faculty/staff. FSU students are admitted free of charge with identification. Big Saturday: Saturday is “Senior Night” as the Bulldogs will honor guards Erin Miller (Niles) and Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing), forward Audrey Thwing (Davison) and student manager Nicole Bridges following the final regular-season home contest .......... Fans are encouraged to “wear gold” for the GVSU game ....... One dollar from every ticket sold Saturday night will be donated to the Susan P. Wheatlake Women's Cancer and Wellness Fund.
The Records: Ferris State, which has won 10 of its last 12 outings to date, holds an 18-7 overall record entering Thursday’s game versus Marygrove and is presently tied for second place in the GLIAC North Division standings with a 12-5 mark. Marygrove owns a 13-14 overall ledger to date. Grand Valley State is 20-5 overall and 13-3 in league play heading into Wednesday’s (Feb. 21) GLIAC road game at Saginaw Valley State. Both teams have clinched conference postseason tourney berths.
GLIAC Standings: Ferris and Lake Superior State presently rank tied for second in the GLIAC North Division with a 12-5 mark .... Grand Valley State is first (13-3) and Michigan Tech fourth (11-6) in the division entering the final week of regular-season play.
GLIAC Tourney: FSU has clinched its eighth-straight GLIAC Tourney berth ..... The top two teams in each division will host quarterfinal-round play Tuesday, Feb. 27th ........ The semifinals/finals will be held March 2-3 at the site of the highest remaining seed .... Ferris has posted a 5-8 overall record in eight previous tourney appearances ..... FSU fell last year to Grand Valley State 79-47 in the GLIAC Quarterfinals (2/28/06) at Allendale.
GLIAC Tourney Scenario: The Bulldogs would host a GLIAC Tourney quarterfinal-round home game Tuesday (Feb. 27) evening at 7 p.m. (EST) with a win over GVSU. FSU would likely be on the road in the opening round based on a loss in Saturday’s game depending upon the outcome of the other league games this week.
Last Season: Ferris State wrapped up its 2005-06 women's basketball season with an 18-10 overall record and made its seventh consecutive GLIAC Tournament appearance last campaign. FSU, which posted a third-place tying 12-6 mark in GLIAC North Division play a year ago, also registered its 10th consecutive season with 10 or more victories in 2005-06.
Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk: Ninth-year FSU head coach Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk presently ranks as Ferris’ all-time winningest coach with a current 153-95 (.617) career record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, she guided FSU to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tourney appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. She spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at Indianapolis (1997-98).
The Bulldog Tradition: The Ferris State women’s basketball program, which is midst its 33rd season of varsity competition, has compiled a 406-420 (.492) all-time mark. The Bulldogs won their only GLIAC crown, advanced to their first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has posted 10 or more victories 10 consecutive seasons to date.
The Bulldog Roster: Ferris’ 2006-07 roster includes three seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and two freshmen. Six of the 13 players are guards while the remaining seven are frontcourt players. All 13 players on the roster hail from Michigan. FSU senior guards Erin Miller and Kristin Reinhart along with junior forward Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) and senior forward Audrey Thiwng are the Bulldogs’ captains.
Jim Wink Arena: Ferris has recorded a 61-25 (.709) overall record to date in games at Jim Wink Arena, including a 48-22 (.686) mark in league play. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU won its first 14 games in the facility.
On The Road: Ferris State is 190-135 (.585) overall since 1995-96 and sports a 109-90 (.548) record in road/neutral site contests during that span. The Bulldogs are 66-50 (.569) overall in road games under head coach Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk, including a 49-32 (.605) record in GLIAC play.

Regional Rankings: Ferris State was not ranked in last week’s (Feb. 14) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings. The rankings help determine the field for the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional March 9-12 at the site of the highest seed. Eight teams will make the regional field. Lewis (Ill.) topped the latest regional poll followed by Grand Valley State, Northern Kentucky, Drury (Mo.) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Six of the top 10 regional teams were from the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) with four from the GLIAC including GVSU, Gannon (7th), Michigan Tech (8th) and and Lake Superior State (10th). New rankings will come out Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Award Times Five: For the fifth time this season, Rachel Folcik was honored as this week’s GLIAC North Division Player of the Week Award recipient. Folcik tallied 47 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals as the Bulldogs won two conference road games last week. The 6-1 Folcik netted a game-best 31 points along with 11 rebounds and four assists on a 13-of-19 (.684) performance from the floor in the Bulldogs’ 93-85 win Thursday (Feb. 15) at Wayne State. She then added 16 points and five rebounds while converting five-of-nine (.559) field goal tries in only 22 minutes of Saturday’s (Feb. 17) 76-66 league win at Lake Superior State. Folcik averaged 23.5 points and eight rebounds on the weekend.
Player Of The Week Notes: Previously, Rachel Folcik was selected as the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week for the first time in her career to open the New Year (Jan. 3) and also attained the honor two other consecutive weeks (Jan. 15 & Jan. 22) in addition to last week (Feb. 12). To date, she's attained the league weekly honor five of the last eight times its been awarded this campaign. Folcik has received the league's weekly honor more than any other male or female conference player this campaign. Her selection as the GLIAC's weekly award winner this week marks the seventh time a Ferris player has earned the distinction this season as both Kristin Reinhart and Erin Miller were previous recipients on Nov. 20 and Nov. 27, respectively. FSU has presently had a player honored as the league's player of the week 20 times in the last five seasons, including the current year, to date.
FSU Duo Earns Academic Honors: FSU’s Erin Miller and Rachel Folcik were recognized as 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball Second Team selections. Miller and Folcik were among only five representatives from a GLIAC-member school named to any of the three District IV teams (first, second, third) selected in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Five players were honored on the first team, the second team had seven selections and the third team featured 10 student-athletes. Miller was a first-team pick last year.
Folcik In Sports Illustrated: Ferris’ Rachel Folcik is featured in this week’s (Feb. 19) Sports Illustrated magazine issue in the popular "Faces In The Crowd" section of the weekly publication. Folcik was nominated for inclusion following her 37-point performance earlier this year in a 90-70 GLIAC road win at Mercyhurst (Jan. 18). Folcik is one of six athletes included in this week's edition and among four college student-athletes across the nation recognized. The "Faces In The Crowd" section, which can also be found online, honors athletes from all levels of competition on a weekly basis for their accomplishments.
Bulldog Bites: This year marks the 11th consecutive year the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games ...... Ferris’ current scoring average of 79.3 points per game is on pace to break the school’s single-season record average of 77.2 ppg set in 2003-04 ...... FSU’s current free throw (.764) and field goal (.462) percentage totals also presently rank as the best seasonal efforts in school history ....... Ferris has won 18 or more games in a season three of the last four years to date.
Statistics Notes: The Bulldogs are currently ranked seventh nationally in field goal percentage (.462) and scoring offense (79.3 ppg) along with 10th in free throw percentage (.764) and 16th in assists (17.3 apg) according to the latest (Feb. 20) NCAA-II National Statistics. FSU currently leads the GLIAC in scoring offense, rebounding offense (41.5 rpg), rebounding margin (+5.1), defensive rebounds (28.3 rpg), assist/turnover ratio (0.98), free throw percentage and assists while ranking second in field goal percentage (.462) for all games played overall .... Rachel Folcik leads the GLIAC in field goal percentage (.560), ranks second in scoring (19.0 ppg) and free throw percentage (.872) in addition to third in rebounding (8.5 rpg). She’s listed 11th nationally in field goal percentage and 16th in free throw percentage to date.
Ferris State vs. Marygrove/Grand Valley State Notebook:
Scouting Marygrove: Marygrove, which is located in Detroit, is a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) member. The Mustangs are currently 13-14 overall to date this campaign following Saturday’s (Feb. 17) 72-70 home loss to Taylor-Fort Wayne. Thursday’s meeting represents the second-ever series' contest between the two schools following last year’s (1/9/06) 82-56 Bulldog win at Big Rapids. The Mustangs are coached by third-year head coach Antonio Hitchcock. MC had won seven-straight games this year prior to last Saturday’s loss. The Mustangs have dropped three previous games versus GLIAC schools this season at Northwood and Michigan Tech along with a neutral site loss to Northern Michigan. Marygrove has played only six of its 27 outings at home this campaign and concludes regular-season play at Ferris State.
Scouting Grand Valley State: GVSU, which has secured the North Division’s top seed for the league tournament, is led in scoring by junior guard Crystal Zick (15.4 ppg). The Lakers, who are guided by fifth-year head coach Dawn Plitzuweit, were 33-3 overall during the 2005-06 campaign and won the NCAA-II National Championship after advancing to the NCAA-II Elite Eight for the second year in a row. The Lakers are ranked 12th in the USA Today/ESPN Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll this week (Feb. 20). GVSU holds a 48-21 advantage heading into Saturday’s 70th encounter. FSU has won only three of the last nine series’ contests and dropped an 84-58 decision in the most recent meeting earlier this year (Dec. 7) at Allendale, Mich. FSU fell to the Lakers 75-55 in last season’s matchup (12/8/05) at Big Rapids. FSU head coach Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk currently has a 9-10 career coaching record against the Lakers.
