Ferris State University senior guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing) has been honored as this season's first recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Women's Basketball Player of the Week Award following her efforts in leading the Bulldogs to the Clarion (Pa.) Classic Championship this past weekend (Nov. 17-18).
Reinhart, who was chosen as the tournament's Most Valuable Player, averaged 21 points, five assists and four rebounds in the Bulldogs' two victories at the season-opening event in Clarion, Pa. The 5-5 Reinhart totaled a team-high 22 points along with five rebounds and five assists in FSU's 85-70 win over West Virginia State last Friday (Nov. 17). She then added 20 points, five assists and three boards as the Bulldogs defeated host Clarion 73-57 in Saturday's (Nov. 18) title contest. Reinhart currently needs only 25 more points to become only the 13th player in school history to notch 1,000 career points.
This week's selection represents the third time Reinhart has picked up the honor in her career as she was also chosen once during each of the last two campaigns.
Reinhart, who was named FSU's 2003-04 Rookie of the Year Award winner, received second-team All-GLIAC North Division kudos for the Bulldogs for the second consecutive season last year. Last season, Reinhart ranked as the squad's second-leading scorer (12.9 ppg) and compiled a team-best 142 assists, which was the third-highest seasonal output in school history. She also added 122 rebounds, 52 steals and 34 made three-point field goals while starting all 28 contests.
As a sophomore (2004-05), Reinhart netted 308 points in 20 outings before missing the final eight games due to injury. Reinhart, who was last year's recipient of the team's Defensive MVP Award, has been awarded the squad's co-Most Valuable Player Award during each of the last two years at Ferris State.
The 2-0 Bulldogs, who were picked to finish second in the 2006-07 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll, will visit Lewis (Ill.) tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 21) for a 6:30 p.m. (EST) non-league encounter in Romeoville, Ill. Ferris' home opener at Jim Wink Arena is set for this Saturday (Nov. 25) beginning at 6 p.m. (EST) versus Drury (Mo.) in Big Rapids, Mich.
