FSU'S ERIN MILLER CHOSEN AS GLIAC WEEKLY AWARD WINNER
Senior Guard Nets North Division Honor
Senior guard Erin Miller (Niles) of the 2006-07 Ferris State University women's basketball squad has been awarded this week's (Nov. 27) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Women's Basketball Player of the Week honor for her play in two contests last week.
Miller led Ferris State with 51 points, 12 assists, 11 rebounds and three steals in two outings last week. She registered a game and season-high 30 points along with five boards, five assists and two steals as Ferris upset nationally 10th-ranked Drury (Mo.) in its 2006-07 home opener Saturday (Nov. 25) by a 91-87 count at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Miller also tallied a game-high tying 21 points with seven assists and six rebounds in the Bulldogs’ narrow 72-69 non-league loss at Lewis (Ill.) last Tuesday (Nov. 21) in Romeoville, Ill. The 5-7 Miller averaged 25.5 points along with six assists and 5.5 rebounds in the two-game stretch. She also connected on seven-of-11 (.636) three-point tries in the two outings.
This week's selection marks the second consecutive week a Ferris player has earned the distinction as senior guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing) was chosen as this season's first recipient last week (Nov. 20). It also represents the fourth time in her career Miller has received the honor. FSU has had a player honored as the league's player of the week 15 times in the last five seasons, including the current year, to date.
A team captain, Miller is currently averaging a team-high 23.5 points per game this campaign. She has scored 19 points or more in all four of FSU's outings to date this year. In addition, she's presently averaging 5.5 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.3 steals a contest.
Miller ranked as FSU's leading scorer (14.7 ppg) last season and was listed among the GLIAC's overall statistical leaders in nine different categories. She compiled 19 double-figure scoring outings last campaign and became the 12th player in school history to register 1,000th career points. She currently ranks fifth on FSU's all-time scoring list with 1,373 career points. Miller was recognized as a first-team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honoree, picked up GLIAC North Division First-Team recognition along with Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region Second-Team honors last year.
Miller returned in 2005-06 after missing all but the first two games of the 2004-05 campaign due to injury. She previously reached double-figure scoring in 28 of her 31 contests in 2003-04 and ranked as the Bulldogs' second-leading scorer (17.0 ppg). Miller was the recipient of the GLIAC’s 2002-03 Freshman of the Year Award after being the team’s third-highest scorer (12.5 ppg) in her initial season.
The 2003-04 Verizon Academic All-District IV Third Team and GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree also attained first-team Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Great Lakes Region and All-GLIAC North Division honors along with being among 40 finalists for the NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Team during the 2003-04 campaign.
Ferris State, which is currently 3-1 overall this season, will visit Northwood Thursday, Nov. 30, for a 6 p.m. (EST) GLIAC-opening tilt in NU’s Bennett Sports Center at Midland, Mich. The game will be carried live by Bulldog Radio, which can heard locally on television Channel 21 both via on-campus cable and Charter Communications in Mecosta County.
