FERRIS' RACHEL FOLCIK CLAIMS GLIAC RECOGNITION

Junior Standout Lands Conference Weekly Award Honor

Junior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) of the 2006-07 Ferris State University women's basketball squad was honored as the first Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Player of the Week recipient of the New Year in an announcement made by the conference office last Wednesday (Jan. 3). It represents her first-ever league weekly award honor.

Folcik tallied 71 points, 34 rebounds, nine steals and eight assists as the Bulldogs split four games over the holiday break. The 6-1 Folcik had two double-double efforts in the stretch, including 20 points and 13 rebounds against Lake Superior State (Dec. 18). She also had 14 points and 13 boards against Southern Indiana (Dec. 29) in the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville Cougar Classic. Folcik averaged 17.8 points along with 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 steals in the four outings. The four games did not include this past Saturday's (Jan. 6) narrow 72-67 league home loss to Hillsdale in which Folcik netted a game-high 23 points and 10 boards.

Folcik's selection marked the third time a Ferris player has earned the distinction this season as both senior guards Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing) and Erin Miller (Niles) were previous recipients on Nov. 20 and Nov. 27, respectively. FSU has presently had a player honored as the league's player of the week 16 times in the last five seasons, including the current year, to date.

A team captain, Folcik is currently averaging a team-high 16.5 points along with a squad-best 8.2 rebounds per game this campaign. She has registered a double-double effort (points & rebounds) in four of her last six outings to date. The 6-1 Folcik has posted six consecutive double-figure scoring performances and tallied 10 points or more in all but two of FSU's 13 outings this season.

Folcik received the squad's Sixth Player and Rookie of the Year Awards as a freshman in 2004-05 after recording 245 points, 150 rebounds and 39 assists while notching 10 double-digit scoring performances in 28 contests. She tallied 10 points or more in six of the squad's final eight games as a rookie. Folcik also ranked second among the squad's leaders in both field goal percentage (.505) and rebounding (5.4 rpg) along with fourth in scoring (8.8 ppg) in 2004-05.

Last season (2005-06), Folcik was a GLIAC All-Academic Team selection. She finished second among the team's performers in rebouding (6.1 rpg) and third in scoring (12.8 ppg) along with registering 19 double-figure scoring games. Folcik also was named to the Aquinas College Classic All-Tournament Team a year ago. Earlier this year, Folcik was chosen as an all-tourney selection as Ferris posted a 2-0 mark in the season-opening Clarion (Pa.) Classic (Nov. 17-18).

Ferris State, which is currently 8-5 overall this season, begins a four-game conference road swing by visiting Northern Michigan Thursday, Jan. 11, for a 5:30 p.m. (EST) tipoff in NMU's Berry Events Center at Marquette, Mich. The game will be carried live by Bulldog Radio, which can heard locally on television Channel 21 both via on-campus cable and Charter Communications in Mecosta County.
