2006-07 FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AWARDS PRESENTED

Honorable Mention All-America junior forward/center Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau) was honored as the Ferris State University women’s basketball team’s 2006-07 Most Valuable Player Award recipient at the program’s annual postseason banquet held Sunday (April 22) in the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Center at Big Rapids, Mich. The event was sponsored by the FSU Sixth Dawg Booster Club.

A 2007 NCAA Division II Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Honorable Mention All-American, Folcik earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division First Team honors along with GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team accolades for her performance this campaign. She also attained the league's divisional Player of the Week Award honor six times this year, all of which came in the final nine weeks of the season. Folcik became only the 14th player in school history to notch her 1,000th career point this season. Additionally, Folcik's 241 made field goals and 602 total points this campagin both represented school single-season marks while her 261 rebounds was the second-highest seasonal figure in FSU history.

Folcik, who averaged a team-best 18.8 points per game, scored in double-figures 27 times this year and notched 13 double-double (points & rebounds) performances. A team captain, Folcik also averaged a squad-best 8.2 rebounds per game this campaign. She finished the year listed second overall in scoring and fifth in rebounds among the GLIAC's overall leaders while ranking second in both field goal (.555) and free throw (.860) percentage for all games played. She was named to the 2006-07 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Women's Basketball College Division Second Team as well as both the Division II Kodak/WBCA All-Region and Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region First Team squads.

The squad's Defensive Stopper Award was presented to senior guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing). The 5-5 Reinhart received All-GLIAC North Division Second Team kudos for the third consecutive campaign as a team captain this season. Reinhart, who was chosen as this season's first recipient of the GLIAC Player of the Week honor (Nov. 21), totaled 25 double-figure scoring efforts and scored more than 20 points in nine outings this year. She concluded her career ranked among the program's top 10 all-time statistical leaders in eight categories, including third in assists (439) and fifth in scoring (1,424 points).

Fifth-year senior guard Erin Miller (Niles) received the squad's Hardest Worker Award. The 2003-04 NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Team Finalist was Ferris' third-leading scorer (11.1 ppg) this season and compiled 107 assists despite missing the final four games due to injury. Miller finished her career listed second on the school's career scoring list with 1,580 points while both her 184 career made three-pointers and 39.6% (184-465) shooting effort behind the three-point arc also rank second in Bulldog history. The two-time (2003-04 & 2005-06) All-GLIAC First Team selection posted 13 double-figure scoring outings this season and placed third among the GLIAC's overall leaders in assist/turnover ratio (1.55) along with sixth in assists (3.96 apg) this campaign.

The squads Sixth Player Award was given to sophomore guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia), who tallied 6.8 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest this year in 32 outings. The 5-6 Thelen, who played only 291 total minutes as a freshman in 2005-06, averaged 23.5 minutes per game this year off the bench. She scored 10 points or more in 11 games, including four consecutive contests to end the year during FSU's postseason run. Thelen led the Bulldogs and ranked sixth in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.427) as she sank 44 of 103 long-range attempts.

Thelen also shared the team's Most Improved Player Award with senior forward Audrey Thwing (Davison). Thwing, who earned team Most Improved Player laurels for the second-straight campaign, concluded her Bulldog career with 694 points and 475 rebounds. Her career field goal percentage of .502 (282-562) currently places her sixth on FSU's all-time leaders chart while her 475 boards rank 15th in school history. Thwing's 7.5 rebounds per contest this year was the squad's second-best figure and her 9.5 points per game placed fourth on the team list. She had 13 double-digit scoring games in 2006-07.

Finally, the team's Rookie of the Year Award went to freshman forward/center Andrea Clancy (Port Austin/North Huron). The 6-2 Clancy, who was the team's tallest player and only freshman to see action this season, recorded 71 points and 48 rebounds in 26 contests. She twice scored more than 10 points, including a season-high 11 points in FSU's NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Semifinal win over Gannon (3/10) at Romeoville, Ill. Clancy shot 55.1% (27-49) from the floor and was 17-of-27 (.630) from the charity stripe this year.

Ferris State, which advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen for the first time in school history this season, was ranked 25th nationally in the final 2006-07 USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll. FSU posted a school-record 23 wins (23-9) this campaign while advancing to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Championship Game for the first time. The Bulldogs, who suffered a 79-69 loss to Drury (Mo.) in the regional final (March 12) at Romeoville, Ill., recorded back-to-back wins in their first two national tournament games en route to the regional runner-up finish. Prior to this year, Ferris had never won a game in the NCAA Tournament.

Ferris also compiled a second-place tying 13-5 GLIAC regular-season finish and earned the program's eighth consecutive GLIAC Tournament bid in head coach Tracey Bloodworth-Fisk's ninth season at the helm.

The Bulldogs will lose three seniors from this season's squad in Reinhart, Miller and Thwing. The remaining 10 players from this year's squad are eligible to return for the 2007-08 campaign.
