Nov. 22: FERRIS STATE SIGNS CEDAR SPRINGS STANDOUT ADAM VELTKAMP

West Michigan Product Joins Bulldog Men’s Basketball Program

First-year Ferris State University men’s basketball head coach Bill Sall has announced the addition of prep frontcourt standout Adam Veltkamp (Cedar Springs), who has signed to attend FSU and play basketball beginning with the 2003-04 academic year.

The 6-8 Veltkamp, who was a 2001-02 honorable mention all-area selection, averaged 11 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots per contest as a junior for Cedar Springs High School under head coach Dave Schlump. The two-time team captain tallied a team-high 103 total blocks in 2001-02 and is expected to play the forward position at Ferris State.

“Adam has good size and will be able to help us at the post positions,” Sall said. “He comes from a successful high school program and has been one of the area’s top players.”

“We’re looking for great things from him in the future,” added Sall.

Veltkamp, who posted the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) fifth-best all-time single-game blocked shots performance (13) in last season’s district final, is a three-time academic all-area honoree. He also placed sixth in the high jump for the Redhawks at the 2002 MHSAA Division II Regional track and field meet.

“Adam’s early signing is important since this is such a big recruiting year for us,” Sall said. “One of the things we needed to address was our size so his addition will be extremely beneficial.”

Veltkamp, who is FSU’s first recruit in the fall signing period, plans to major in engineering at Ferris State. The son of Ron and Christine Veltkamp of Cedar Springs, Veltkamp played competitive basketball for the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Storm Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) squad.

Ferris State, which opened the 2002-03 campaign Friday (Nov. 22) at Saint Joseph’s (Ind.), will host Calvin College Tuesday, Nov. 26, at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena. Tipoff for the non-league contest is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action Saturday, Nov. 30, hosting the University of Findlay (Ohio) in a 3 p.m. (EST) tilt.
