Senior forward Jeff Guernsey (Buckley) and junior forward Nathan Wruble (Harbor Beach) of the 2002-03 Ferris State University men's basketball team have both received Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic Men’s Basketball Team honors in an announcement made by the league office.
Guernsey earned the honor for the third consecutive season while Wruble is currently a two-time recipient. Both were among 29 conference players named to the all-academic team. To be eligible to receive league all-academic laurels, student-athletes must have attained a cumulative grade point average (gpa) of at least 3.0 or greater (on a 4.0 scale), be a starter or key reserve and must not be a freshman or first-year college transfer. League champion Michigan Tech tallied a conference-high eight honorees, Northwood had six selections and both Findlay and Lake Superior State recorded three picks. Ferris was one of four schools with two players chosen along with Ashland, Gannon and Hillsdale.
A team co-captain, Guernsey tallied a personal career-high 69 rebounds in 25 contests this season while scoring 69 points and shooting 43 percent (24-56) from the floor. He concluded his FSU career with 228 points, 188 rebounds, 57 assists and 47 steals in 83 outings. Guernsey, who received both Dean’s and President’s Academic Awards for holding the team’s highest gpa during the 2001-02 campaign, ranked fifth among the squad’s leaders in offensive rebounds (28), steals (20) and made three-point baskets (7) this season. He registered a 3.57 gpa in Ferris’ computer information systems program.
The 6-7 Wruble totaled 89 points and 115 rebounds in 26 appearances this campaign. He started 24 games and presently has recorded 255 rebounds, 193 points and 42 steals in his three-year career. The 2001-02 FSU Coaches Award winner placed second in field goal percentage (.500; 34-68), rebounds (115) and fourth in blocked shots (10) for Ferris this season. Wruble compiled a 3.20 gpa in the school’s surveying engineering degree program.
Ferris posted an 11-15 overall record and a fourth-place 7-11 GLIAC North Division finish this campaign under first-year head coach Bill Sall. The Bulldogs' overall record and league finish were their best since compiling a 21-12 mark and a fourth-place 10-8 league ledger during the 1997-98 season.
