FERRIS STATE ANNOUNCES 2002-03 MEN’S BASKETBALL AWARDS

Senior Center Adam Anderson Named Team Most Valuable Player At Annual Banquet

The Ferris State University men’s basketball team selected senior center Adam Anderson (Kent City) as its Most Valuable Player for the 2002-03 season during the program’s annual awards banquet held Sunday (April 27) at the Wheeler Pavilion on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich.

The 6-10 Anderson, who concluded his career ranked seventh on FSU’s career scoring leaders list (1,597 points), scored 10 points or more in 60 of his final 63 career appearances. Anderson, who ranks as Ferris’ career blocks leader (142), is presently third on the school’s career made free throw chart (482-724) and ranks ninth on FSU's all-time rebounding list with 616 boards. A 2002-03 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division First-Team selection, Anderson compiled a team-high 453 points in 26 outings (17.4 ppg) this campaign. He led FSU in scoring 14 of the final 19 games while ranking among the league's season statistical leaders in scoring, blocked shots (1.5 bpg) and rebounding (6.1 rpg). The 2000-01 FSU Most Valuable Player Award recipient registered 24 double-figure scoring performances and had eight 20-plus point outings this season, including a season-high 30 points at Saginaw Valley State (1/23).

During the 2002-03 campaign, Anderson posted the school's fourth-best single-season blocked shots total (40) and fifth-highest single-season made free throw mark (156). Anderson, who also was a 2002-03 All-GLIAC North Division Defensive Team and second-team National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II Great Lakes Region All-District pick, reached double-figure scoring 80 times in 105 career outings. The 2002-03 Street & Smith's Division II Preseason Honorable Mention All-America performer previously established FSU single-season records in made free throws (179) and blocks (50) during the 2000-01 season while attaining both 2000-01 All-GLIAC North Division First-Team and GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team recognition.

Sophomore guard Carlton Epps (Benton Harbor) received the program’s Defensive Player Award for the second consecutive season. The 6-2 Epps placed third among the squad’s scoring leaders (11.6 ppg) and tallied a team-high 51 steals this campaign. Epps also notched 112 rebounds and sank 44 three-point baskets while starting all 26 contests. He presently ranks eighth on Ferris’ career steals chart with 109 thefts in 50 career appearances.

The Most Improved Player Award was presented to freshman forward Jeffery Shanahan (Flint/Kearsley), who scored 91 points and grabbed 56 rebounds in 26 contests this campaign. The 6-6 Shanahan, who was the squad’s field goal percentage (.548; 40-73) leader this season, scored 52 points in his final 13 games after totaling 39 points in his initial 13 contests. Senior guard Brian Monahan (Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor Pioneer) received the program’s Coaches Award after registering 27 points and 24 assists in 24 games during his final campaign. The 6-1 Monahan concluded his four-year career with 437 points, 201 assists and 179 rebounds in 95 career outings. Monahan, who is the co-holder of the school’s single-game steals record (8), also ranks 10th to date among Ferris’ career steals leaders with 105.

Senior forward Jeff Guernsey (Buckley) joined Anderson as Captain’s Award recipients as a result of tallying a personal career-high 69 rebounds in 25 contests this season. Guernsey also scored 69 points and shot 43 percent (24-56) from the floor in 2002-03. He concluded his FSU career with 228 points, 188 rebounds, 57 assists and 47 steals in 83 outings. Guernsey, who was a three-time (2000-03) GLIAC All-Academic Team member, ranked fifth among the squad’s leaders in offensive rebounds (28), steals (20) and made three-point baskets (7) this season.

Anderson, Guernsey and Monahan were also honored as Senior Award winners for their contributions to the program.

Ferris posted an 11-15 overall record and a fourth-place 7-11 GLIAC North Division finish this campaign under first-year head coach Bill Sall. The Bulldogs' overall record and league finish were their best since compiling a 21-12 mark and a fourth-place 10-8 league ledger during the 1997-98 season.
