
The "Most Improved Player" award was presented to junior forward Ray Waits after he led the Bulldogs in scoring (19.7), rebounding (8.6), field goals (236), free throws (177) and assists (89). In addition to recording the third-highest single-season point total (650) in team history, he was a first-team All-GLIAC and second-team All-Great Lakes Region standout.
Senior center Tim Dillingham was honored as the "Most Valuable Defensive Player." After playing in all 33 games, he set new career highs in field goal percentage (.658), rebounds (108), assists (32) and steals (14).
The "Sportsmanship Award" for dedication to the team went to sophomore guard Leaondre Salter. He set new career highs in every major category and scored in double figures eight times while leading the Bulldogs in free throw percentage (82.0).
"Carom Awards" honoring academic excellence were presented to both sophomore guard Aaron Nauta and senior guard Zarie Phillips. Nauta received his award for earning the highest grade point average on the squad, while Phillips had the highest grade point average during the fall semester.
Seniors Cory Anderson, Smith and Phillips received "Captain's Awards" for their outstanding leadership. Anderson and Phillips were honored with "Coaches' Awards" for their fortitude both on and off the court.
Ferris completed a successful 1997-98 season with a 21-12 record, its first 20-win season in nine years. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Division II Playoffs for the first time since 1990 after winning the GLIAC post-season tournament.
