Senior guard Dennis Springs (Toledo, Ohio/Scott) of the 2005-06 Ferris State University men's basketball team was chosen as this week’s (Nov. 22) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week for his performance in FSU’s initial two outings this campaign. The announcement was made Tuesday (Nov. 22) afternoon by the league office.
Springs averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 assists and three steals in the Bulldogs’ two non-league road contests to open the season at Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville last week. The 5-6 Springs became the 24th player in school history to notch 1,000 career points as he had a game-high 21 points, six assists and two steals in FSU's 103-85 loss at Saint Joseph’s last Tuesday (Nov. 15) in Rensselaer, Ind. He then added a game-best 22 points along with four steals and three assists Saturday (Nov. 19) as the Bulldogs dropped a 72-55 decision versus Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill.
A 2004-05 GLIAC North Division Second Team honoree, Springs guided Ferris to the squad's first win of the season Tuesday (Nov. 22) evening as he totaled 15 points, six assists and three steals in FSU's 78-64 triumph over West Michigan rival Calvin in Grand Rapids, Mich. The victory marked Ferris State's first-ever series win in the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Springs attained NCAA-II Great Lakes Region All-Tournament Team kudos along with GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team honors during the 2004-05 campaign. He currently ranks as the school’s all-time leader in career assists with 550 to date and previously was both a second-team All-GLIAC North Division and GLIAC All-Defensive Team honoree during the 2003-04 campaign. Springs, who’s FSU’s leading returning scorer (12.8 ppg) from last year, also set a school single-season record with 213 assists last year.
This week's selection marks the second time Springs has received the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week honor as he was also recognized once during the 2003-04 campaign (March 1). It is the league's initial Player of the Week presentation this year. Springs recently (Nov. 15) was also chosen second overall among the top 10 West Michigan collegiate players to watch this year by the Grand Rapids Press.
The Ferris State men’s basketball team, which is currently 1-2 overall this campaign, will host California (Pa.) in its 2005-06 home opener Saturday, Nov. 26, at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs were ranked 18th in the 2005-06 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll.
