FERRIS BASKETBALL TEAMS RANKED AMONG REGION'S TOP 10 SQUADS
Bulldog Teams Remain On Regional List This Week
The Ferris State University men's and women's basketball squads both remain ranked among the region's top 10 teams in the latest NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Rankings, which were announced Wednesday (Feb. 22).
The Bulldog men's squad, which is currently 16-10 overall and 13-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action to date this campaign, is listed 10th in this week's regional poll after previously being ranked ninth a week ago. The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) holds the top two positions in the current poll with Grand Valley State the highest ranked GLIAC school at number three on the men's side. Findlay is fourth and Mercyhurst ninth among the four league schools featured in the rankings. Saint Joseph’s (Ind.) heads the regional poll.
FSU's women's basketball squad presently is 18-8 overall along with 12-5 in the GLIAC and was listed ninth in this week’s regional rankings. The GLVC holds two of the top three positions in the women's poll with Grand Valley State leading the GLIAC schools in second place. Lake Superior State is fourth, Michigan Tech sixth, Ashland eighth and Hillsdale 10th as six league schools are included in this week's listing. Drury (Mo.) remains on top of the women's poll.
The regional rankings are used to help determine the eight-team field for the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament at the end of the season. The men's regional is set for March 11-14 with the women's event slated to take place March 10-13. The official bracket and site for the respective regional tournaments will be announced late Sunday evening, March 5th. The winners of both the GLIAC and GLVC postseason tournaments receive automatic bids into the regional field.
Ferris State will visit archrival Grand Valley State for its regular-season finale this Saturday, Feb. 25, inside GVSU's Fieldhouse Arena in Allendale, Mich. The women's contest tips off at 6 p.m. (EST) followed by the men's game at 8 p.m. (EST). Both contests can be heard live locally on News Talk 1460 AM WBRN with Rob Bentley providing the play-by-play coverage.
The Ferris State men's basketball team has clinched a quarterfinal-round GLIAC Tournament home game, which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 28, against Northern Michigan in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldog women's team still has a chance of hosting an opening-round contest in the league tournament depending upon Saturday's (Feb. 25) results in the final day of regular-season action. The final official pairings, game times and ticket prices will be announced following the completion of the league's regular-season schedule Saturday.
Rankings Notes: The final regional rankings will be released next Wednesday, March 1 ... The regional rankings announcements are made weekly by the respective NCAA-II Men's and Women's Basketball National Committees ... Ferris has compiled a 14-7 overall in-region men's basketball record this season while the Bulldog women have posted a 13-6 regional performance to date.
