ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR ANNUAL RIVALRY GAMES AGAINST GVSU

Fans Encouraged To "Gold Out The Wink" For Thursday Doubleheader

FSU Basketball The Ferris State University Athletics Department is encouraging all Bulldog fans to wear gold in an effort to "Gold Out The Wink" as part of activities surrounding Thursday (Dec. 8) evening's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men's and women's basketball doubleheader versus West Michigan archrival Grand Valley State in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich.

Tipoff for the women's contest is slated for 6 p.m. (EST) with the men's game to follow at approximately 8 p.m. (EST). The first 1,000 students attending the games will receive a free FSU "Beat Valley" t-shirt.

Additional activities for the evening have also been planned. Members of the 2004-05 Ferris State men's basketball team will receive their championship rings for winning a second-straight GLIAC North Division title along with earning NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional runner-up honors during a special presentation at halftime of the women's basketball game.

Between the women's and men's games, the school's “Bulldog of the Year” Award will officially be renamed in honor of former FSU Athletics Director Dean Davenport. Davenport and his wife, Joyce, will also help unveil a plaque featuring an all-time list of those presented with the award. The plaque will be put up on permanent display in the lobby between Wink Arena and the Ewigleben Ice Arena following the ceremony. The 2004-05 recipients of the award, men's basketball guard Carlton Epps and women's volleyball outside hitter Karla Fairbanks, will also be recognized during the evening ceremony.

A large crowd is expected for the annual West Michigan rivalry series. Last season, the Bulldog men's basketball team pulled out a dramatic 76-75 overtime decision over the Lakers in front of Wink Arena's second-largest crowd ever (1,177) as FSU's Dennis Springs hit a game-winning shot just before the final buzzer sounded and fans stormed the floor. Ferris and GVSU presently lead the GLIAC North Division with identical 2-0 men's basketball marks this campaign.

The Laker women's team, which advanced to the NCAA-II Elite Eight last year, was ranked seventh nationally in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Top 25 poll last week (Nov. 28). GVSU enters the women's contest with a 2-0 league mark while Ferris is currently 1-1 overall in GLIAC women's basketball play.

Individual game tickets to FSU regular-season home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
