FSU Men’s Basketball At A Glance: The Ferris State University men’s basketball team will travel to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) road contests. FSU visits Northern Michigan Thursday, Feb. 24, for a 7:30 p.m. (EST) game in Marquette, Mich. Ferris will then conclude the regular-season Saturday, Feb. 26, versus Michigan Tech in a 3 p.m. (EST) contest at Houghton, Mich.

Tied For First: FSU is currently 19-5 overall and 11-5 in league action this season. The Bulldogs and Grand Valley State (11-5) are both tied atop the GLIAC North Division with two regular-season games remaining. Ferris, which has won eight consecutive games to date this campaign, is ranked third in the latest (Feb. 16) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings with a 14-5 regional mark.

Title Scenario: Ferris, which claimed the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division title, could repeat as the divisional champions depending upon this week’s results. Several possible scenarios exist entering the final two games of the regular-season with both Ferris & GVSU still in the title hunt. However, the Bulldogs would hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Lakers should both teams win their final two games in the Upper Peninsula.

FSU Clinches Home Game: The Bulldogs have clinched a GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal round home game, which will be held Tuesday, March 1, at a time yet to be determined. FSU can finish no lower than second in the league’s North Division based on the GLIAC’s tiebreaker formula. The semifinals and finals will be held Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, at the site of the highest remaining seed. Offical tourney parings will be released by the league office following this weekend’s games.

Media Coverage: Both of FSU’s games this weekend will be carried live by local radio station WBRN-1460 AM with Rob Bentley providing the play by play action. They can also be accessed live via the internet by clicking on the Bulldog Athletics Webcasts icon at www.ferris.edu/sports.

Three starters and eight letterwinners return.

Head Coach Bill Sall: A 1994 Calvin graduate, third-year FSU head coach Bill Sall previously held assistant coaching positions at Calvin (1992-95), Ferris State (1995-98) and Hillsdale (1998-02) prior to being named Ferris State’s 11th head coach. The Zeeland, Mich., native served as Ferris’ interim head coach for a portion of the 1995-96 campaign and led the Bulldogs to a 5-8 mark. Before joining the coaching ranks, Sall was a standout player at Calvin from 1985-90. He twice (1989-90) received second-team National Association of Basketball Coaches Division III All-America honors and led Calvin to three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAA) championships, four NCAA-III Tournament bids and the 1990 NCAA-III Final Four. The Bulldogs, who made their first league tourney appearance since 1997-98 a year ago, are 4-8 all-time in six previous tournament appearances following last season’s 72-71 quarterfinal round home loss to Northwood (3/2/04) in Wink Arena.
