BACK-TO-BACK GLIAC NORTH DIVISION CHAMPIONS!
Ferris Wins Second-Straight League Regular-Season Title
The Ferris State University men's basketball claimed its second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Regular-Season Championship with a 72-68 win over Michigan Tech this past Saturday (Feb. 26) in Houghton, Mich.
This season represents FSU's 11th all-time league championship. The Bulldogs have presently won more league crowns than any other conference member. FSU had not won a GLIAC championship since 1994-95 prior to last season’s (2003-04) initial title run under head coach Bill Sall.
FSU, which is presently 21-5 overall and 13-5 in league play this campaign, has won 10 consecutive contests to date this campaign. Ferris’ current 21 victories this season represents FSU’s most wins since posting a 21-12 mark in 1997-98 and only the second time in the last 10 seasons Ferris has won 20 or more games.
The Bulldogs are currently ranked 24th in the latest (Feb. 23) National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Bulletin Top 25 Poll, marking the school's first national ranking since the 1988-89 campaign. FSU is also ranked third in the current (Feb. 23) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings.
Ferris State will host Northern Michigan Tuesday, March 1, in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament.
Tipoff in FSU's Jim Wink Arena is set for 7 p.m. (EST). Tickets will be available at the door or can be obtained by contacting the FSU Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888.
The winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal round contest will advance to the semifinals/finals set for Friday and Saturday, March 4-5, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
The winner of this season’s GLIAC Tournament will receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament slated for March 12-15 at a site to be determined. Eight teams, including six at-large teams, will participate in the regional with the official announcement set to be released Sunday, March 6.
