Second-year Ferris State University men's basketball head coach Bill Sall has announced the addition of prep center Chad DeLong (Fremont) and guard Marcus Lancaster (Wyoming/Lee), who both plan to attend and compete in men's basketball at FSU beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.
"The addition of Chad and Marcus will give us added depth in the future,” Sall said. “They both come from successful high school teams and have the ability to develop well in our program."
The 6-9 DeLong led Fremont High School to a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class B Regional Tournament appearance during the 2003-04 campaign. DeLong, who was coached by Pete Zerfas, guided the Packers to an 18-6 overall record and their second consecutive district championship as a senior. He scored a team-high 16 points and had eight rebounds in FHS’ 87-47 season-ending loss to Muskegon Heights in the 2004 MHSAA Class B Region No. 15 Tournament semifinals (March 16) at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. DeLong helped Fremont post a 22-2 overall mark and earn a regional berth in his junior season (2002-03). He plans to major in Computer Animated Design at FSU.
“Chad has the essential height to be a quality big man in our league with added strength and continued dedication,” said Sall. “He made significant improvements from his junior to senior years in high school, which is an encouraging sign. It will take a development process on his part to get used to the collegiate game, but we’re excited he’s coming to Ferris State.”
Lancaster, a first-team 2003-04 Associated Press Class C All-State honoree, compiled 28.1 points, 4.3 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game for Wyoming Lee High School in 2003-04. The 5-10 Lancaster led the Rebels to a 12-11 overall record under head coach Brett Lambert in 2003-04. The three-year varsity letterwinner was both a second-team 2003-04 Detroit News Class C All-State and Grand Rapids Press All-Area Dream Team selection. Lancaster, who was among the Detroit Free Press’ Top 100 players for the 2003-04 season, totaled 13 points in Wyoming Lee’s 68-61 district title game loss to Saugatuck (March 12) at Grand Rapids (Mich.) Baptist High School. His former high school teammate, Mike Wingard, presently plays collegiate basketball at Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Northwood University. Lancaster plans to major in education at Ferris State.
“Marcus is a quality guard who will be an exciting player to watch in the years to come,” Sall said. “He’s quick and has the ability to score, which will be beneficial. We’re hopeful he can continue to gain strength and versatility in his game.”
DeLong and Lancaster join prep guard Tyler Wolfe (Cedar Springs) and Northern Michigan University transfer guard Antwuan Holt (Okemos) as incoming players for the Bulldogs in 2004-05.
Ferris State, which claimed the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Regular-Season Championship, finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-14 overall record and a 14-4 league mark. FSU, which has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member, posted its best overall record in 2003-04 since compiling a 21-12 ledger during the 1997-98 season.
