The Ferris State University men’s basketball program, which claimed the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division championship, has announced the addition of transfer guard Antwuan Holt (Okemos) starting with the 2004-05 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ second-year head coach Bill Sall.
The 6-3 Holt, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, spent his initial two collegiate campaigns (2002-04) at fellow GLIAC North Division member Northern Michigan University. The NMU Athletics Department granted Holt a full release allowing him to play immediately as a junior during the 2004-05 season.
“Antwuan is a proven guard in our league and fits our system well,” Sall said. “He’s a versatile guard who can get up and down the floor. In addition, he has the ability to slash to the basket, which is something we really haven’t had the last couple of seasons.
“We’re expecting him to have a significant impact next season,” Sall added.
Holt ranked as the Wildcats’ third-leading scorer (10.1 ppg) and guided NMU to a 16-12 overall record and a third place 10-8 league mark in 2003-04. He posted team bests in minutes (792), made free throws (63), assists (63), steals (39) and three-point percentage (.434) while starting 23 contests. Holt, who appeared in all 28 outings, totaled 12 double-figure scoring performances at NMU under head coach Dean Ellis during the 2003-04 campaign. He ranked 16th in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings in both free throw percentage (.700) and steals (1.39 spg) along with 25th in assists (2.25 apg). Holt sank 33-of-76 (.434) three-point field goal attempts, which placed fifth overall among the GLIAC’s three-point field goal percentage leaders.
As a freshman (2002-03), Holt started 14 contests and averaged 10.5 points per game as NMU registered a 15-14 overall record and placed second (10-8) in the GLIAC’s North Division. The 2002-03 team Newcomer of the Year Award recipient scored 10 points or more 15 times and led the Wildcats in made free throws (79). He added 31 steals, 27 assists and 12 blocked shots in 2002-03.
Prior to his collegiate career, Holt led Okemos High School to league and district championships in his final two prep campaigns. The two-year varsity letterwinner earned both team and conference Most Valuable Player Award recognition as a senior in 2001-02. He was a fourth-team all-state honoree and earned first-team all-conference kudos under head coach Dan Stolz. OHS posted a 42-6 overall record during his two varsity campaigns from 2000-02.
The son of Elbert and Darlene Holt, Antwuan plans to major in sports management at Ferris State. He joins prep guard Tyler Wolfe (Cedar Springs) as incoming players for the Bulldogs in 2004-05. Holt averaged 11.5 points per game and posted two double-digit scoring efforts in four meetings against the Bulldogs while at NMU.
Ferris State finished the 2003-04 campaign with a 14-14 overall record, including a 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark. FSU, which has won more GLIAC championships (10) than any other league member, posted its best overall record in 2003-04 since compiling a 21-12 ledger during the 1997-98 season.
