The Ferris State University men’s basketball program has signed prep guard Joe DeMartin (Mason) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play basketball at FSU, starting with the 2003-04 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ second-year head coach Bill Sall.

DeMartin is the younger brother of current Ferris State women’s basketball senior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason), who compiled a school-record 525 points in 2002-03 while attaining first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division accolades.
“Joe had a great high school career and we really believe his best basketball is ahead of him,” Sall said. “He’s one of the better point guards in West Michigan so we’re excited to land him.”
The 6-1 DeMartin averaged 16 points, three rebounds and three assists per game while guiding Mason High School to an 18-5 overall record, the Capital Circuit League title and a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class A district final finish during the 2002-03 campaign. He was recognized as both an honorable mention 2002-03 Detroit Free Press Class A All-State selection and a Lansing State Journal All-Area Dream Team honoree.
“We’re expecting Joe to come in and contend for playing time,” said Sall. “He’s an outstanding young player who should be a great asset to our squad.”
A two-time (2002-03) league all-academic team pick, DeMartin also garnered team Most Valuable Player Award and Best Offensive Player Award kudos for the second consecutive season in 2002-03. The 2001-02 honorable mention all-area selection attained league MVP honors and WLNS-TV 6 Player of the Week recognition this campaign. He was a third-team all-league pick after averaging 10.4 points and two assists per outing in 2001-02.
DeMartin, who is undecided on a major, is the son of Daniel and Judi DeMartin. His father played basketball at both Lansing (Mich.) Community College and Truman State (Mo.), formerly Northeast Missouri State.
DeMartin joins forward/center Adam Veltkamp (Cedar Springs), forward Michael Daniels (Detroit/Murray-Wright), guard C.J. Van Wieren (Holland/West Ottawa), forward Terrance Shaw (Saginaw/Bridgeport) and forward Willie Burrel (Muskegon Heights/Muskegon CC) as the Bulldogs’ 2003-04 men’s basketball signees to date.
Ferris posted an 11-15 overall record and a fourth-place 7-11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division finish this campaign. The Bulldogs' overall record and league finish were their best since compiling a 21-12 mark and a fourth-place 10-8 league ledger during the 1997-98 season.
