FSU Hosts Olivet College in Home Opener

FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will host the Olivet College Comets in its home opener this Tuesday (Nov. 20) at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs enter the contest with an 0-2 overall record while Olivet is 1-1 overall. Following the contest, Ferris State will break for the Thanksgiving holiday before hosting Aquinas College Nov. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Last Weekend - Ferris State opened the 2001-02 campaign with an 0-2 mark last weekend (Nov. 16-17) at the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic held at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky. In its 74th season opener last Friday, Ferris State fell to Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) power Northern Kentucky 79-71. In Saturday's consolation game, FSU lost to Christian Brothers University (Tenn.) 87-79. Sophomore forward Johnathan Bowers was named to the all-tournament team.
Bowers Leads the Way for FSU - Sophomore forward Johnathan Bowers paced the Bulldog attack at the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic last weekend in Highland Heights, Ky. The 6-9 Bowers scored 33 points and grabbed 22 rebounds in two games to be selected to the all-tournament team.
Against Northern Kentucky, Bowers tallied a career-high 21 points on a 10-of-11 performance from the floor. He registered his first career double-double versus Christian Brothers as he scored 12 points and grabbed a personal-best 14 rebounds.
A returning starter, Bowers averaged 8.7 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per contest during the 2000-01 campaign. Prior to Friday's contest against Northern Kentucky, he had scored a career-best 16 points in three different games. His previous career rebounding high (10) was notched against Wisconsin-Parkside last season (12/22/00). Bowers scored his 200th career point in the loss to Northern Kentucky.
Wallace Has Career Day - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Bulldogs in Saturday's game against Christian Brothers. After two games, Wallace is Ferris State's scoring leader (18.0 ppg). Against Christian Brothers, Wallace was eight-of-13 from the field and sank eight-of-9 free throw attempts. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals in 35 minutes of action. In Friday's loss to Northern Kentucky, the 6-3 Wallace scored 11 points and had seven rebounds. Last season (2000-01), Wallace was FSU's second-leading scorer (10.1 ppg).
Anderson Continues Streak - Senior Adam Anderson has scored 10 points or more in 35 of his past 36 career outings, including each of his previous 29 games. A 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, Anderson scored 19 points and pulled down five rebounds in last Saturday's loss to Christian Brothers. The 6-10 Anderson totaled 13 points and seven rebounds in the season opener against Northern Kentucky. Anderson led the GLIAC in scoring (21.3 ppg) during the 2000-01 campaign.
Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a career coaching record of 52-86 (.377). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1997-98 season. Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).
Bulldog Bites - Seniors Adam Anderson and Matt Miller have been elected FSU's 2001-02 team captains ....... FSU fell to 0-3 all-time against Northern Kentucky with last Friday's defeat ......... The 2001-02 season marks the fifth-consecutive season the Bulldogs have opened the season on the road ....... Anderson scored his 1,100th career point and registered his 100th career block against NKU .......... Anderson needs 46 rebounds to collect his 500th career rebound ....... Miller needs a single rebound to register his 200th career rebound ....... Junior Brian Monahan is nine points away from compiling his 300th career point ...... Anderson Garners Preseason Honors - Senior center Adam Anderson has been named to the 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America team and has garnered 2001-02 Street and Smith's NCAA Division II Preseason Honorable Mention All-America accolades. During the 2000-01 campaign, the 6-10 Anderson earned first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division honors and was a 2000-01 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Great Lakes Region selection. The GLIAC's 2000-01 leading scorer (21.3 ppg), Anderson notched the fifth-best single-season scoring average by a Bulldog junior last season and became the 22nd player in school history to score 1,000 career points (Feb. 10, 2001). Anderson compiled FSU's ninth-best scoring output (555 points) last season.
Against Olivet - Ferris State and Olivet will square off for the 24th time this Tuesday at Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs own a 12-11 advantage in the all-time series. The two teams last met during the 1959-60 campaign. FSU won that contest 87-72 and has won two-straight series meetings. The Comets won the first four games of the series, which began during the 1946-47 season.
Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4. Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more.
Next Week - Ferris State will host Aquinas College Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio.
