FERRIS STATE SIGNS FLINT’S JEFFERY SHANAHAN

New Bulldog Head Coach Bill Sall Inks First Recruit

The Ferris State University men’s basketball program has signed prep basketball standout Jeffery Shanahan (Flint/Kearsley) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play men’s basketball at FSU, starting in the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs’ first-year head coach Bill Sall.

A 6-5 forward, Shanahan averaged 18.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game as a senior while leading the Kearsley Hornets to a school-record 15-6 overall mark during the 2001-02 campaign. The two-time (2001-02) team Most Valuable Player Award winner was also a unanimous first-team 2001-02 All-Big Nine Conference selection.

“Jeffery is a good athlete and a nice fit for our program,” Sall said. “He’s a good student and will provide us with added depth at both the small and power forward positions next season.”

A third-team 2000-01 all-league honoree, Shanahan tallied 15 points and nine rebounds per contest as a junior. He twice (2000-02) served as team captain and was named to the 2001 Michigan Junior National Basketball Team. The three-year letterwinner was prepped by Paul Adas.

“As time goes on, I really believe he could become an impact player in our program,” Sall said. “He’s a versatile player and it should be exciting to watch him develop.”

Besides basketball, Shanahan also competed for the Hornets’ track and field team. A 2002 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Lower Peninsula Division 2 State Track and Field qualifier, Shanahan placed third in the shot put, fourth in the high jump and was a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay team at last week’s (May 18) regional meet in Linden, Mich.

The son of Patrick and Carol Shanahan, Jeffery plans to major in engineering at Ferris State.

Ferris State concluded the 2001-02 season with a 4-22 overall mark and was 1-17 (seventh place) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s North Division under former head coach Edgar Wilson.
