Muskegon Heights Product Becomes Latest Bulldog Men’s Basketball Recruit

The Ferris State University men’s basketball program has signed guard Dominic Gray (Muskegon Heights) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play men’s basketball at FSU, starting in the 2002-03 academic year. The announcement was made by first-year FSU head coach Bill Sall.

“Dominic is a good shooter with a great stroke,” Sall said. “He has continued to improve throughout his high school career and really came into his own at the end of his senior season.”

The 6-2 Gray tallied 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists per game while leading Muskegon Heights High School to a 21-5 overall record and a Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class C State Semifinal appearance as a senior during the 2001-02 campaign. The honorable mention 2001-02 Detroit News Class C All-State selection scored a team-high 18 points and had five steals in the Tigers’ 75-68 overtime loss versus McBain in the state semifinal contest (March 21) at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich.

“Muskegon Heights has had great success throughout Dominic’s high school career,” Sall said. “He’ll have to adjust to a few things at the collegiate level, but we’re really expecting great things out of him in the years ahead. He’s only touched his potential as a basketball player.

“As Dominic continues to develop, he could become a complete player in our league,” added Sall.

A two-time (2001-02) all-area pick, Gray received Muskegon Heights’ 2001-02 Most Improved Player Award and was a Who’s Who in American High School Sports honoree. The three-year letterwinner averaged 19.5 points and five rebounds per game as a junior. Gray, who also garnered all-area football laurels (2001), was prepped by LaMar Chapman.

The son of Norris Taylor and Tamieko Simmons, Gray plans to major in elementary education at Ferris State.

He joins Jeffery Shanahan (Flint/Kearsley) and Dennis Springs (Toledo, Ohio/Scott) as 2002-03 FSU men’s basketball recruits.

Ferris State finished the 2001-02 season with a 4-22 overall record, including a 1-17 (seventh place) finish in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s North Division under former head coach Edgar Wilson.
