FERRIS STATE ADDS TOLEDO NATIVE DENNIS SPRINGS

Transfer Guard Joins Bulldog Men’s Basketball Program

First-year Ferris State University men’s basketball head coach Bill Sall has announced the addition of transfer guard Dennis Springs (Toledo, Ohio/Scott), who has committed to attend FSU and play basketball beginning with the 2002-03 academic year.

The 5-6 Springs, who earned third-team 2000-01 Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Division I All-State accolades, attended Bowling Green State (Ohio) University this past academic year but did not play collegiate basketball.

“We’re extremely fortunate to be able to sign Dennis,” Sall said. “For what he lacks in stature, he makes up for through determination and overall athletic ability.

“He’s a good point guard, which was something we thought we needed to be successful next season,” added Sall.

A 2001 Scott High School graduate, Springs averaged 15.5 points per game as a senior. He led the Bulldogs to a conference title, district championship and regional runner-up finish during his prep career. The two-time (2000-01) All-Toledo City League selection also received the Toledo Blade’s 2001 Player-of-the-Year Award and was a conference all-academic selection (2000-01).

“We’d like to be able to push the ball up the floor and get easier baskets,” Sall said. “Dennis is certainly the type of player who can do that. He’s a good fit for our program.”

Springs, a four-year letterwinner, served as the Bulldogs’ 2000-01 team captain. Prepped by Earl Morris, Springs was named the 2000-01 OHSAA District Player-of-the-Year Award recipient. Besides athletics, Springs was also involved in Bowling Green State University’s Upward Bound Program for college preparation.

Springs, who joins Jeffery Shanahan (Flint/Kearsley) as the 2002-03 FSU men’s basketball signees to date, is the son of Dennis and Jackie Springs. He plans to major in accounting at Ferris State.

Ferris State concluded the 2001-02 season with a 4-22 overall mark and was 1-17 (seventh place) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s North Division under former head coach Edgar Wilson.
