Jan. 29: Bulldogs Headed To Upper Peninsula

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will face the nationally-ranked Michigan Tech University Huskies this Thursday (Jan. 31) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at MTU's Student Development Center Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST). Ferris will then visit the Northern Michigan University Wildcats for a 3 p.m. (EST) league game this Sunday (Feb. 3) in NMU's Berry Events Center at Marquette, Mich.

Last Week - Ferris State dropped a 77-65 league decision to the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals last Thursday (Jan. 24) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. FSU lost a 71-65 conference home contest against the Lake Superior State University Lakers last Saturday (Jan. 26). Ferris is presently 3-15 overall and 0-10 in conference action. FSU currently is midst a seven-game losing streak.

Wallace Leading FSU Charge - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace nailed a career-high seven three-point baskets while tallying a game-high 28 points against Lake Superior State. He had a team-high 22 points versus SVSU and presently has totaled 22 points or more in six consecutive games this season.

The 6-3 Wallace currently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (20.2 points per game) and has 16 double-figure scoring contests this campaign. He has reached double-figures (scoring) in 14 of his last 16 appearances and has been Ferris' leading scorer in 11 of the last 14 outings.

Wallace currently leads the Bulldogs in both made free throws (65-93; .699) and three-point baskets (42-120; .350) this campaign. He registered his 600th career point against the Lakers and has 626 career points to date. Wallace presently ranks 34th nationally in the latest (Jan. 21) NCAA Division II scoring statistics.

Wruble Rebounding Well - Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble totaled a career-high 10 rebounds against the Cardinals and currently ranks as FSU's sixth-leading rebounder (3.6 rpg) this campaign. The 6-7 Wruble presently has 96 career rebounds and is four shy of notching his 100th career rebound. He has scored 75 career points to date and needs 25 more to register his 100th career point.

Epps Notches Career Outing - Freshman guard Corey Epps attained a career-high seven assists versus Saginaw Valley State. The 6-2 Epps has posted six double-figure scoring outings this campaign, including three of the last four contests to date. He presently ranks as FSU's sixth-leading scorer (6.8 ppg) this season. Epps scored 10 points against Lake Superior State and currently has tallied 123 career points.

Miller Scores 400th Point - Senior forward Matt Miller scored his 400th career point versus Lake Superior State and has registered 402 career points to date. The 6-8 Miller tallied a personal career-high 21 points against Saginaw Valley State and has posted five double-figure scoring performances this campaign. The 2001-02 FSU co-captain ranks as Ferris' third-leading rebounder (4.7 rpg) and fifth-leading scorer (8.2 ppg) to date this season. He presently has grabbed 277 career rebounds and needs 23 more to notch his 300th career rebound.

Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 55-99 (.357). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).

Against Michigan Tech - FSU and Michigan Tech will square off for the 87th time this Thursday at Houghton with the series tied at 43 wins apiece. The Huskies have won six consecutive series meetings and posted a 72-50 home win in the last series' contest (Feb. 24, 2001). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 3-8 versus Michigan Tech. The Huskies are 16-2 overall and 8-2 in league play heading into this Thursday's game. Junior forward Matt Cameron is presently the leading scorer (17.1 ppg) this season for the Huskies, who have won seven of their last eight games to date. Michigan Tech is coached by eighth-year head coach Kevin Luke and is ranked 13th nationally in the latest (Jan. 28) National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Basketball Bulletin Top 25 poll.

Scouting Northern Michigan - Sunday's contest marks the 95th series meeting against Northern Michigan. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 59-35 and have won five of the last six series meetings. However, FSU defeated Northern Michigan 70-62 in the last series' meeting (Feb. 22, 2001) at NMU's Berry Events Center to end an 11-year losing streak in Marquette. Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current 3-7 career coaching mark versus NMU. The Wildcats are 9-8 overall and 3-7 in league play heading into this Thursday's conference home game against Grand Valley State. Sophomore forward Billy Hill is currently NMU's leading scorer (14.4 ppg) this campaign. The Wildcats have won two of their last three games to date. Northern Michigan is coached by Dean Ellis, who's in his 16th season at the helm.
