Jan. 22: FSU Falls To 3-13 Overall; Two Home Games Ahead

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will face the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals this Thursday (Jan. 24) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. (EST). Ferris will then host the Lake Superior State University Lakers in a conference game this Saturday (Jan. 26) at 3 p.m. (EST).

Last Week - Ferris State dropped a 71-66 decision versus the Northwood University Timberwolves last Thursday (Jan. 17) at NU's Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich. The Bulldogs lost an 86-85 overtime decision against the Grand Valley State University Lakers last Saturday (Jan. 19) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. Ferris is currently 3-13 overall and 0-8 in conference action. FSU currently is in the midst a five-game losing streak.

Wallace Scores 40 Points - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace tallied a career-high 40 points and had seven assists versus Grand Valley State. His 40-point output was FSU's best single-game scoring performance since Dannie Hayes (1991-95) registered 44 points against Wisconsin-Parkside (Dec. 6, 1994) and is the GLIAC's top individual scoring outing this season.

The 6-3 Wallace currently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (19.6 points per game) and has 14 double-figure scoring contests this campaign. He added 24 points at Northwood and has presently totaled 22 points or more in four-straight games. He has reached double-figures (scoring) in 12 of his last 14 appearances and has been FSU's leading scorer in nine of the last 12 outings.

Wallace currently leads the Bulldogs in both made free throws (58-83; .699) and three-point baskets (33-101; .327) this campaign. He grabbed his 150th career rebound at Northwood and has compiled 162 career rebounds to date.

Wruble Has Career Week - Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble totaled a career-best 11 points against GVSU and garnered a career-high seven rebounds at Northwood. The 6-7 Wruble has started eight consecutive games to date and is averaging 2.1 points per game. He currently has scored 69 career points and needs 31 more to register his 100th career point. Wruble presently has 80 career rebounds and is 20 shy of notching his 100th career rebound.

Epps Scores 100th Point - Freshman guard Corey Epps attained his 100th career point at Northwood and has scored 113 career points to date. He added a personal-best six steals versus Grand Valley State. The 6-2 Epps has posted five double-figure scoring outings this campaign, including two consecutive contests to date. Epps presently ranks as FSU's sixth-leading scorer (7.1 ppg) this season.

Miller Needs 25 Points - Senior forward Matt Miller currently has scored 375 career points and is 25 points shy of recording his 400th career point. The 2001-02 FSU co-captain ranks as Ferris' third-leading rebounder (4.9 rpg) and fifth-leading scorer (7.6 ppg) to date this campaign. He presently has grabbed 270 career rebounds and needs 30 more to register his 300th career rebound. The 6-8 Miller currently has posted four double-figure scoring performances this season.

Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 55-97 (.362). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).

Bulldog Bites - Freshman guard Michael Anderson scored a career-high eight points versus Grand Valley State ........... Freshman guard Carlton Epps registered six points and five rebounds against GVSU after missing the previous two games with an injured knee ........... Saturday's attendance (699) was FSU's sixth-largest all-time Jim Wink Arena crowd ........... The Bulldogs currently have a combined 2-29 (.065) January record over the past four seasons ........... Junior forward Jeff Guernsey presently has 86 career rebounds and is 14 shy of notching his 100th career rebound ........... Marcus Wallace's 40-point effort versus Grand Valley State broke current FSU senior center Adam Anderson's Wink Arena scoring record (31 points) set against Northern Michigan last season (Feb. 3, 2001). A 2001-02 Basketball Times Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, Anderson will miss the remainder of the 2001-02 campaign and apply for a medical redshirt season due to a bone bruise injury (knee) suffered in a 79-59 non-conference win against Olivet College (Nov. 20) ......... Wallace presently ranks as the GLIAC's second-leading overall scorer (19.6 ppg) this season. He ranks first (21.8 ppg) in conference-only contests.

At Jim Wink Arena - Ferris State is currently 8-24 (.250) overall in three seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU is presently 1-6 at home this campaign and has lost six-consecutive home contests to date.

Against Saginaw Valley State - FSU and Saginaw Valley State will square off for the 62nd time this Thursday at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 36-25 and have won the last two series meetings. In the last meeting (Feb. 17, 2001), FSU recorded a 79-68 home win. Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 4-7 versus Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals are 4-12 overall and 1-7 in league play heading into this Thursday's game. Freshman forward Anthony Parker is currently the leading scorer (12.8 ppg) this season for the Cardinals, who have lost four of their last five games to date. Saginaw Valley State is coached by fourth-year head coach Dean Lockwood.

Scouting Lake Superior State - Saturday's contest marks the 104th series meeting against Lake Superior State. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 64-39. However, LSSU has won three of the last four meetings and defeated Ferris State 92-78 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last series meeting (Feb. 8, 2001). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current 5-5 career coaching mark versus LSSU. The Lakers are 9-7 overall and 2-7 in league play heading into this Thursday's game at Grand Valley State. Junior guard Ben Dewar is currently LSSU's leading scorer (19.5 ppg) this campaign. The Lakers have won two of their last three games to date. Lake Superior State is coached by Marty McDermott, who is in his fifth season at the helm.

Up Next - Ferris State will face the Michigan Tech University Huskies next Thursday (Jan. 31) at 7:30 p.m. (EST) in MTU's Student Development Center Gymnasium at Houghton, Mich. The Bulldogs will then visit the Northern Michigan University Wildcats next Sunday (Feb. 3) for a 3 p.m. (EST) game at NMU's Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich. Both are GLIAC contests.
