Jan. 15: FSU Drops Third Straight Contest

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will face the Northwood University Timberwolves this Thursday (Jan. 17) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at NU's Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST). Ferris will then host the Grand Valley State University Lakers in a conference game this Saturday (Jan. 19) at 3 p.m. (EST) in FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Media Coverage - Saturday's game against Grand Valley State will be carried live by radio station WMFN-AM (640) in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rick Berkey (play-by-play) and Kent Fisher (color commentary) will handle the broadcast. The broadcast can also be accessed through the Grand Valley State University Athletics Website at this address: http://lakersports.gvsu.edu.

Last Week - Ferris State dropped an 83-72 conference home decision to the Ashland University Eagles last Saturday (Jan. 12) at Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs are currently 3-11 overall and 0-6 in conference action. FSU currently is midst a three-game losing streak.

Wallace Scores 500th Point - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace tallied a game-high 22 points against Ashland while registering his 500th career point in the process. The 6-3 Wallace has scored 512 points to date in 40 career outings (12.8 points per game). He has recorded 12 double-figure scoring outings this season and presently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (17.8 ppg).

Wallace currently leads the Bulldogs in both made free throws (46-68; .676) and three-point baskets (27-88; .307) this campaign. He has been FSU's leading scorer in eight games this season, including seven of the last 10 outings. Wallace presently has 149 career rebounds and needs one more to notch his 150th career rebound.

Epps On Injured List - Freshman guard Carlton Epps didn't play versus Ashland due to a knee injury suffered in last Friday's (Jan. 11) practice. The extent of Epps' injury remains unknown at this time and he's listed as questionable for this Thursday's Northwood contest. Prior to his injury, Epps had notched eight double-figure scoring games this season. He has tallied 10 points or more in seven of his last 10 appearances and currently ranks as FSU's fourth-leading season scorer (10.7 ppg). Epps presently has totaled 139 career points and is 11 points shy of registering his 150th career point.

Guernsey Having Best Season - Junior forward Jeff Guernsey has attained double-figure scoring in three of the last five contests. The 6-5 Guernsey presently has scored 124 career points and is 26 points shy of notching his 150th career point. He currently has 80 career rebounds and needs 20 more to garner his 100th career rebound. He is averaging 4.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 13 appearances this season. During the 2000-01 campaign, Guernsey totaled 54 points in 23 contests (2.3 ppg).

Miller Notches Double-Digit Effort - Senior forward Matt Miller tallied his sixth double-figure scoring performance of the season against Ashland as he totaled 12 points. The 6-8 Miller currently has scored 362 career points in 83 outings (4.4 ppg). He presently has grabbed 260 career rebounds and needs 40 more to register his 300th career rebound. The 2001-02 FSU co-captain ranks as Ferris' third-leading rebounder (4.9 rpg) and fifth-leading scorer (7.7 ppg) to date this campaign.

Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 55-95 (.367). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).

Bulldog Bites - Junior guard Brian Monahan presently has 148 career rebounds and is two shy of attaining his 150th career rebound ........... Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble grabbed a career-high seven rebounds versus Ashland ............ Freshman guard Michael Anderson dished out a career-best four assists against the Eagles ........... Nine of FSU's 10 players who suited up against Ashland reached the scoring column ......... Monahan was FSU's game assists leader for the sixth time this campaign as he had five assists versus Ashland .......... Senior center Adam Anderson, a 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, will miss the remainder of the 2001-02 campaign and apply for a medical redshirt season due to a bone bruise injury (knee) suffered in a 79-59 non-conference win against Olivet College (Nov. 20) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena ............... FSU is presently 8-23 (.258) overall in three seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena ........... Freshman guard Corey Epps currently has totaled 86 career points and needs 14 more to register his 100th career point.

Against Northwood - FSU and Northwood will square off for the 55th time this Thursday at NU's Bennett Sports Center. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 39-15 and have won two of the past three series meetings. In the last meeting (Feb. 10, 2001), Northwood recorded an 83-58 home win. Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 4-7 versus Northwood. The Timberwolves are 9-5 overall and 4-3 in league play heading into this Thursday's game. Sophomore guard Dallas Logan is currently NU's leading scorer (17.3 ppg) this season. The Timberwolves have won two consecutive games to date. Northwood is coached by fifth-year head coach Bob Taylor.

Scouting Grand Valley State - Saturday's contest marks the 74th series meeting against Grand Valley State. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 41-32. FSU has won three of the last five meetings and defeated Grand Valley State 84-81 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last series meeting (Feb. 12, 2001). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching mark of 4-6 versus GVSU. The Lakers are 8-9 overall and 1-6 in league play heading into this Saturday's game. Senior guard John Flynn is currently GVSU's leading scorer (21.4 ppg) this campaign. The Lakers have won one of their last four games to date. Grand Valley State is coached by former FSU assistant men's basketball coach Terry Smith (1987-88), who is in his fifth season at the helm.
