Feb. 19: FSU Claims First GLIAC Victory

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will face the Northern Michigan University Wildcats this Thursday (Feb. 21) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. (EST). FSU will conclude the 2001-02 campaign against the Michigan Tech University Huskies this Saturday (Feb. 23) in a 3 p.m. (EST) league home game.

Last Week - Ferris State defeated the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals 81-80 this past Saturday (Feb. 16) at SVSU's O'Neill Arena in University Center, Mich. The victory, which was Ferris' first conference win this campaign, snapped a 12-game losing streak. The Bulldogs are presently 4-20 overall and 1-15 in conference action.

Wallace Hits Game Winner - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace, who nailed a game-winning three-point shot with five seconds remaining, tallied a team-high 29 points while notching his 21st double-figure scoring outing this campaign at Saginaw Valley State. Wallace has attained double-figure scoring in 19 of his last 21 appearances and has been Ferris' leading scorer in 15 of the last 20 outings to date. He currently has registered 14 20-plus point games this season.

The 6-3 Wallace grabbed his 200th career rebound versus SVSU and presently has 205 career boards. He has scored 753 career points to date and is 47 points away from garnering his 800th career point.

Wallace has presently made 57 three-point field goals this season and is one shy of tying Leon Larthridge (58; 1990-91) for fifth place on the school's single-season chart. He leads the Bulldogs in scoring (20.4 ppg), made free throws (87-123; .707) and three-point field goals (57-171; .333) to date this campaign. Wallace has compiled 490 points this season and needs 67 more to tie Clarence Carlisle (557; 1970-71) for ninth place on the school's single-season chart.

Corey Epps Scores 150th Point - Freshman guard Corey Epps has posted eight double-figure scoring outings this campaign, including five in his last 10 contests to date. He presently ranks as FSU's sixth-leading scorer (6.5 ppg) this season. Epps registered his 150th career point at Saginaw Valley State and currently has scored 157 career points. He has grabbed 70 rebounds to date and is five shy of notching his 75th career rebound.

Miller Grabs 300th Rebound - Senior forward Matt Miller notched his 10th double-figure scoring performance this campaign while registering 13 points at SVSU. The 2001-02 FSU co-captain ranks as Ferris' third-leading rebounder (4.5 rpg) and fifth-leading scorer (8.8 ppg) to date this season. He also grabbed his 300th career rebound versus the Cardinals. The 6-8 Miller currently has scored 464 points in 93 career outings (5.0 ppg). He has tallied both a personal career-high 210 points and 108 boards this campaign.

Carlton Epps One Steal Away - Freshman guard Carlton Epps presently has 52 steals this campaign and is one shy of tying Joe Blankenship (53; 1992-93) for ninth place on Ferris' single-season list. The 6-2 Epps ranks second overall in steals (2.36 spg) in the latest (Feb. 18) GLIAC statistics.

Head Coach Edgar Wilson - In his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 56-104 (.350). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).

Bulldog Bites - Junior forward Jeff Guernsey attained his 150th career point at Saginaw Valley State and currently has scored 155 career points ............ Marcus Wallace presently ranks as both the GLIAC's second-leading overall scorer (20.4 ppg) and the league's second-leading scorer (21.9 ppg) in conference-only contests. He ranks 28th nationally in the latest (Feb. 11) NCAA Division II scoring statistics .......... Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble recorded his 100th career point and tallied a career-high 11 rebounds at SVSU ................ Wallace has recorded two of the GLIAC's top three scoring performances this campaign - 40 points vs. Grand Valley State (1/19/02) and 35 points vs. Northwood (2/9/02). His 40-point outing against the Lakers is currently the ninth-best NCAA Division II performance this season ............... Freshman guard Michael Anderson has presently tallied 83 career points and is 17 points shy of notching his 100th career point .......... Wallace has scored 20 points or more nine times in his last 12 outings and is averaging 23.8 ppg in that span. He presently has made 95 career three-point field goals and needs seven more to tie Randy Prince (102; 1994-96) for ninth place on FSU's all-time chart .......... Carlton Epps has dished out 47 career assists to date and needs three more to attain his 50th career assist. He currently has registered 11 double-figure scoring outings this campaign ............ Wallace's current season scoring average (20.4 ppg) ranks fourth-best among all-time FSU sophomores. He has scored at least one point in 48-straight games dating back to last season .............. Junior forward Doug Isanhart has tallied 44 career points to date and is six shy of notching his 50th career point ......... Ferris' win at SVSU ended a 15-game conference losing streak dating back to last season.

Monahan Registers 400th Point - Junior guard Brian Monahan registered his 400th career point at Saginaw Valley State and currently has totaled 403 career points. Monahan presently has attained 93 career steals and is nine shy of tying David Tuck (102; 1986-90) for 10th place on the school's all-time chart.

Scouting Northern Michigan - Thursday's contest marks the 96th series meeting against Northern Michigan. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 60-35 and have won six of the last seven series meetings. In the last series' meeting (Feb. 3, 2002), Northern Michigan captured an 80-63 home victory. Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current 3-8 career coaching mark versus NMU. The Wildcats are 13-11 overall and 6-10 in league play heading into this Thursday's game. Sophomore forward Billy Hill is currently NMU's leading scorer (15.7 ppg) this campaign. The Wildcats have lost two consecutive games to date. Northern Michigan is coached by Dean Ellis, who's in his 16th season at the helm.

Against Michigan Tech - FSU and Michigan Tech will square off for the 88th time this Saturday with the Huskies holding a 44-43 advantage. MTU has won seven consecutive meetings and posted a 77-53 home win in the last series' contest (Jan. 31, 2002). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 3-9 versus Michigan Tech. The Huskies are 22-2 overall and 14-2 in league play heading into this Thursday's (Feb. 21) league game at Grand Valley State. Junior forward Matt Cameron is presently the leading scorer (18.3 ppg) this season for the Huskies, who have won nine consecutive games to date. Michigan Tech is coached by eighth-year head coach Kevin Luke and is ranked 10th nationally in the latest (Feb. 11) National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Basketball Bulletin Top 25 poll.
