Feb. 5: FSU Drops Two Games On Northern Trip
FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will face the Lake Superior State University Lakers this Thursday (Feb. 7) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. (EST). Ferris will then host the Northwood University Timberwolves for a 3 p.m. (EST) league game this Saturday (Feb. 9) in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs will square off against the Grand Valley State University Lakers next Monday (Feb. 11) in GLIAC action with tipoff slated for 8 p.m. (EST) at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.
Last Week - Ferris State lost two conference games in Michigan's Upper Peninsula last weekend (Jan. 31 and Feb. 3). FSU dropped a 77-53 decision to the Michigan Tech University Huskies last Thursday (Jan. 31) at MTU's Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. The Bulldogs lost an 80-63 contest against the Northern Michigan University Wildcats last Sunday (Feb. 3) in NMU's Berry Events Center at Marquette, Mich. Ferris is presently 3-17 overall and 0-12 in conference action. FSU currently is midst a nine-game losing streak.
Wallace On Top Of Game - Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace registered a team-high 18 points while tallying his 17th double-figure scoring performance this campaign at Michigan Tech. The 6-3 Wallace has attained double-figure scoring in 15 of his last 17 appearances and has been Ferris' leading scorer in 12 of the last 16 outings to date. He currently has tallied 11 20-plus point games this season.
Wallace presently has 182 career rebounds and needs 18 more to register his 200th career rebound. He currently has 95 career assists and is five shy of notching his 100th career assist. Wallace has made 46 three-point field goals to date this campaign and needs six more to tie Richard Legreair (52; 1988-89) for 10th place on the school's single-season chart.
Anderson Has Best Outing - Freshman guard Michael Anderson totaled both a career-high nine points and three three-point baskets at Northern Michigan. The 6-3 Anderson currently has scored 67 career points and is 33 shy of registering his 100th career point. Anderson has started three games this campaign and is averaging 3.5 points per game (ppg).
Epps Playing Well - Freshman guard Corey Epps has posted seven double-figure scoring outings this campaign, including four of the last six contests to date. He presently ranks as FSU's sixth-leading scorer (7.0 ppg) this season. Epps scored 10 points at Northern Michigan and currently has tallied 139 career points.
Miller Leads The Way - Senior forward Matt Miller notched his eighth double-figure scoring performance this campaign while totaling a team-high 14 points at Northern Michigan. The 2001-02 FSU co-captain ranks as Ferris' third-leading rebounder (4.6 rpg) and fifth-leading scorer (8.5 ppg) to date this season. He presently has grabbed 284 career rebounds and needs 16 more to garner his 300th career rebound. The 6-7 Miller currently has registered 424 points in 89 career outings (4.8 ppg).
Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 55-101 (.353). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).
Bulldog Bites - Marcus Wallace presently ranks as both the GLIAC's third-leading overall scorer (19.5 ppg) and the league's third-leading scorer (20.9 ppg) in conference-only contests .......... Freshman guard Carlton Epps currently has 96 career rebounds and needs four more to register his 100th career rebound ......... Junior forward Jeff Guernsey grabbed his 100th career rebound while tallying a team-high seven boards at Northern Michigan .......... Guernsey has scored 140 career points to date and needs 10 more to garner his 150th career point ......... Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble notched his 100th career rebound at Michigan Tech and presently has 109 career boards. The 6-7 Wruble has scored 79 career points to date and needs 21 more to register his 100th career point ........... Carlton Epps currently has 45 steals this campaign and is seven shy of tying Jarvis Walker (52; 1988-89) for 10th place on the school's single-season chart.
Against Lake Superior State - Thursday's contest marks the 105th series meeting against Lake Superior State with the Bulldogs holding a 64-40 series advantage. However, LSSU has won four of the last five meetings and defeated FSU 71-65 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last series' contest (Jan. 26, 2002). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson has a current 5-6 career coaching mark versus LSSU. The Lakers are 12-9 overall and 4-9 in league play heading into this Thursday's contest. Junior guard Ben Dewar is currently LSSU's leading scorer (19.9 ppg) this campaign. The Lakers have won three of their last four games to date. Lake Superior State is coached by Marty McDermott, who's in his fifth season at the helm.
Scouting Northwood - FSU and Northwood will square off for the 56th time this Saturday at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 39-16 but have split the last four series meetings. In the last meeting (Jan. 17, 2002), Northwood recorded a 71-66 home win. FSU head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 4-8 versus Northwood. The Timberwolves are 12-8 overall and 7-6 in league play heading into this Thursday's game at Grand Valley State. Sophomore guard Dallas Logan is currently NU's leading scorer (18.4 ppg) this season. The Timberwolves have won two consecutive games to date and are coached by fifth-year head coach Bob Taylor.
Versus Grand Valley State - FSU holds a 41-33 advantage heading into next Monday's 75th series meeting against Grand Valley State. However, GVSU has won two of the last three meetings and defeated Ferris 86-85 in overtime at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last series meeting (Jan. 19, 2002). Ferris State head coach Edgar Wilson currently has a 4-7 career coaching record against Grand Valley State. The Lakers are 11-11 overall and 4-8 in league play heading into this Thursday's home game against Northwood and this Saturday's road contest at Lake Superior State. Senior guard John Flynn is currently GVSU's leading scorer (23.1 ppg) this campaign. The Lakers have won four of their last six games to date. Grand Valley State is coached by former FSU assistant men's basketball coach Terry Smith (1987-88), who's in his fifth season at the helm.
