Dec. 21: Bulldogs Headed To Phoenix

FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will depart next Tuesday (Dec. 25) for the Grand Canyon University/Trip Sports Classic slated for Dec. 27-29 in Phoenix, Ariz. FSU will square off with the Grand Canyon University 'Lopes Thursday, Dec. 27, at 10 p.m. (EST) and meet the Mesa State (Colo.) College Mavericks Saturday, Dec. 29, at 8 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs have lost six-straight games since beating the Olivet College Comets (Nov. 20) 79-59 at Jim Wink Arena.

Bulldogs Fall to St. Joseph's - Ferris State dropped its only contest of the week 103-75 against the St. Joseph's (Ind.) College Pumas last Tuesday (Dec. 18) at Jim Wink Arena. Sophomore guard Marcus Wallace scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss. Ferris State is currently 1-8 overall and 0-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action.

Anderson Sidelined With Injury - Senior center Adam Anderson, a 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, has missed the past six games due to a bone bruise injury (knee) and remains out indefinitely. Prior to his injury, Anderson was averaging 15.3 points per game (ppg). He has scored 10 points or more in 36 of his past 37 career outings, including each of his previous 30 contests. Anderson, the GLIAC's 2000-01 leading scorer (21.3 ppg), presently has 326 career made free throws and is six away from tying Marcus Kennedy (332; 1986-89) for eighth place on the all-time FSU chart. He has 56 double-figure scoring games in 79 career outings. FSU is 0-6 this season with Anderson out of the lineup.

Wallace Continues to Lead The Way - Marcus Wallace is FSU's leading scorer (17.8 points per game) through nine games. A returning starter, Wallace has notched six-consecutive double-figure scoring games and has led the Bulldogs in scoring four of the past five outings. He leads FSU with eight double-digit scoring performances this year. The 6-3 Wallace scored his 400th career point against St. Joseph's and presently has registered 423 career points.

Freshman Scoring Well at FSU - Freshman guard Carlton Epps registered his sixth double-figure scoring outing this season against the Pumas as he tallied 10 points and seven rebounds. Epps posted his second career double-double (points and rebounds) versus Gannon University (Dec. 6) as he had 11 points and 10 rebounds. The 6-2 Epps is currently FSU's third-leading scorer (12.1 ppg). He scored a career-high 27 points versus the Aquinas College Saints (Nov. 27). Epps leads the team with 20 steals while twin brother Corey Epps, a 6-2 freshman guard, ranks second with 16 thefts.

Bowers Reaches Key Marks - Sophomore forward Johnathan Bowers grabbed his 150th career rebound and scored his 250th career point against Gannon. He currently has registered 269 career points and 157 career rebounds in 29 games. Bowers has posted three double-figure scoring games this season and ranks as FSU's leading rebounder (6.3 rebounds per game) and fourth-leading scorer (11.0 points per game) to date. He tallied a career-high 21 points in the 2001-02 season opener against Northern Kentucky University (Nov. 16) and recorded his first career double-double (points and rebounds) versus Christian Brothers University (Nov. 17) with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Miller Posts Double-Figure Effort - Senior forward Matt Miller, a 2001-02 FSU team captain, posted his fourth double-figure scoring outing this year versus St. Joseph's as he totaled 12 points. Miller recorded his 300th career point versus Gannon as he totaled 12 points and eight rebounds. The 6-8 Miller currently has 327 career points in 78 outings (4.2 ppg). He recorded his first career double-double (points and rebounds) versus the Aquinas College Saints (Nov. 27) as he scored 15 points and collected 11 rebounds. Miller currently ranks as FSU's second-leading rebounder (5.3 rebounds per game).

Bowers Climbing Chart - Johnathan Bowers presently has 36 career blocks and moved into eighth place on the all-time FSU chart with four blocks against Mercyhurst College (Dec. 8). The 6-9 Bowers needs one block to tie Marcus Tumblin (37; 1989-93) for seventh place on the FSU career list.

Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 53-92 (.366). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State University, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament Championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-96) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).

Scouting the Tourney Foes - The Bulldogs have never faced either Grand Canyon or Mesa State entering the Grand Canyon University/Trip Sports Classic in Phoenix. The 'Lopes enter the classic with a 3-3 overall mark in six home games. Grand Canyon is coached by Leighton McCrary, who is in his 12th season at the helm. Junior guard Del Somers is presently Grand Canyon's scoring leader (21.3 ppg). Mesa State is 4-4 overall and 1-2 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) action heading into next Friday's (Dec. 28) classic contest versus Grand Canyon. The Mavericks were 20-7 overall last season and are coached by sixth-year head coach Jim Heaps.

Anderson Earns Preseason Honors - Adam Anderson has been named to the 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America team and the 2001-02 Street and Smith's NCAA Division II Preseason Honorable Mention All-America squad. A 2000-01 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Great Lakes Region pick, Anderson compiled FSU's ninth-best single-season scoring output (555 points) last season.

Monahan Nearing 150th Assist - Junior point guard Brian Monahan presently has 141 career assists and is nine away from posting his 150th career assist. The 6-1 Monahan is averaging 4.4 points per game.

Bulldog Bites - Adam Anderson has scored 1,144 career points and is 17 points shy of matching Ted Bee (1,161; 1973-77) for 16th place on the all-time FSU list ........... Anderson currently has 458 rebounds and is 42 shy of registering his 500th career rebound ...... Matt Miller has 240 career rebounds and needs 10 more to collect his 250th career rebound ....... Freshman guard Timothy O'Brien scored a career-best eight points against St. Joseph's .......... Junior forward Doug Isanhart tallied a FSU career-best three points versus the Pumas .......... Carlton Epps has reached double-figures (scoring) in five of the past six games.

At Jim Wink Arena - Ferris State is presently 8-22 (.267) overall in three seasons of action at Jim Wink Arena. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 season.

Looking Ahead - Ferris State returns to GLIAC action as the Bulldogs travel to Hillsdale College to face the Chargers Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. (EST). FSU will face Wayne State University Saturday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. (EST) in Detroit, Mich.
