Dec. 3: Bulldogs Fall To 1-5 Overall
FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University men's basketball team will host the Gannon University Knights this Thursday (Dec. 6) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. (EST). FSU will then host the Mercyhurst College Lakers this Saturday (Dec. 8). Start time for the league contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs are currently 1-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Last Week - Ferris State lost two non-conference games and one league contest last week. The Bulldogs dropped a 72-71 decision versus the Aquinas College Saints last Tuesday (Nov. 27) at Jim Wink Arena. FSU fell 91-72 at the University of Findlay Oilers last Thursday (Nov. 29) in its 2001-02 GLIAC opener in Findlay, Ohio. Last Saturday, Ferris State lost a 95-76 contest at the Calvin College Knights in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Freshmen Brothers Spark FSU - Freshmen twin brothers Carlton and Corey Epps led the Bulldog attack last week and continue to post impressive numbers. After six games, Carlton is averaging 14.3 points per game (ppg) while Corey is averaging 8.8 ppg.
Carlton tallied a career-high 27 points on a 10-of-15 performance from the floor in last Tuesday's one-point home loss against Aquinas. He added 12 points at Findlay last Thursday.
In last Saturday's game at Calvin, Carlton scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to notch his first career double-double (points and rebounds) performance. Corey registered a personal-best 18 points in the loss.
Carlton has scored in double-figures three-straight games and four times overall this season. Corey has reached double-figures in scoring in three of the past four games and ranks second on the squad with 14 total assists.
Injuries Hamper FSU Effort - Senior co-captain Adam Anderson, a 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, has missed the past three games due to a bone bruise injury (knee). His status remains questionable for this weekend's games against Gannon and Mercyhurst. Sophomore forward Johnathan Bowers suffered a wrist injury against Findlay and did not play against Calvin. He is listed as questionable for Thursday's contest against Gannon. Senior forward Matt Miller injured a calf muscle versus Findlay, but started last Saturday's game at Calvin and scored three points.
Big Outing for Miller - Matt Miller, a 2001-02 FSU team captain, recorded his first career double-double (points and rebounds) versus Aquinas last Tuesday as he scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds. Miller made his first start of the season in the same game due to Anderson's injury. The 6-8 Miller currently has 297 career points and needs three more to register his 300th career point. He grabbed his 200th career rebound in FSU's lone win of the year against Olivet College (Nov. 20) and currently ranks as FSU's third-leading rebounder (5.2 rebounds per game).
Head Coach Edgar Wilson - Now in his sixth season at the helm, head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 53-89 (.373). A 1978 graduate of Michigan State, Wilson guided the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament championship and a NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance (1997-98). Wilson previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan (1993-1996) and five seasons as an assistant at Michigan State (1978-83).
Bulldog Bites - Junior point guard Brian Monahan registered his 300th career point against Findlay ......... Sophomore Marcus Wallace has five double-figure scoring games this season and is FSU's leading scorer (15.7 ppg) to date .......... Johnathan Bowers presently has 29 career blocks and is one away from tying Dion Ferrell (30; 1997-00) for 10th place on the school chart ............ Adam Anderson has scored 1,144 career points and is 17 points shy of matching Ted Bee (1,161; 1973-77) for 16th place on the all-time FSU list ........... Anderson currently has 458 rebounds and is 42 shy of registering his 500th career rebound ........ Anderson has scored 10 points or more in 36 of his last 37 career outings, including each of his previous 30 appearances. He has reached double-figures in scoring 56 times in 79 career games ............. Anderson presently has 326 career made free throws and needs six more to tie Marcus Kennedy (332; 1986-89) for eighth place on the school chart .......... Prior to last Saturday's loss, FSU had won two of its three previous meetings with Calvin .......... Junior Brandon Alexander tallied a career-high five points at Calvin.
Against This Week's Opponents - Ferris State and Gannon will square off for the seventh time this Thursday night. The Knights own a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series, which began during the 1995-96 campaign. Gannon has won three-straight series meetings and is 1-1 in two previous Big Rapids appearances. FSU is 2-5 all-time against Mercyhurst. The Lakers have won three-straight series contests. Mercyhurst is 2-1 against the Bulldogs in Big Rapids. FSU head coach Edgar Wilson has a current career coaching record of 1-4 versus Gannon and 2-3 against Mercyhurst. Gannon is 4-0 overall this season while Mercyhurst is currently 3-1 overall heading into this Monday (Dec. 3) night's home game against Columbia Union College (Md.) and this Thursday's (Dec. 6) game at Grand Valley State.
Anderson Garners Honors - Senior center Adam Anderson has been named to the 2001-02 Basketball Times NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 All-America team and the 2001-02 Street and Smith's NCAA Division II Preseason Honorable Mention All-America squad. A 2000-01 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Great Lakes Region pick, Anderson compiled FSU's ninth-best scoring output (555 points) last season.
Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4. Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more.
Up Next - Ferris State is idle next week. The Bulldogs will host the St. Joseph's College (Ind.) Pumas on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. (EST). The contest is FSU's last before the holiday break.
