Sophomore Marcus Wallace Receives Most Valuable Player Honors At Team Banquet

Marcus WallaceFerris State University men’s basketball sophomore guard Marcus Wallace was selected the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2001-02 season during the program’s annual awards banquet Sunday (April 28) afternoon at the Wheeler Pavilion on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich.

Wallace, who was a second-team 2001-02 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division pick, led the conference in three-point field goals (2.54 pg) and ranked second among the GLIAC’s overall scoring leaders (20.7 points per game) this season. The 6-3 Wallace tallied 539 points in 26 outings this campaign while registering 23 double-figure single-game scoring performances, including 16 20-plus point efforts. His 66 made three-point field goals this year represents the school’s third-best all-time single-season total. Wallace, who was Ferris’ leading scorer in 18 games, currently ranks ninth on FSU’s career three-point field goal chart with 104 treys in 52 career contests. He scored a career-best 40 points in an 86-85 overtime defeat to Grand Valley State (Jan. 19) at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena and concluded the season ranked 20th among the nation’s overall scoring leaders.

Senior forward Matt Miller received the Most Valuable Teammate Award. The 6-8 Miller, who was also presented a Senior Award for his four-year contributions to the program, averaged a personal career-high 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game in 26 contests this past season. The 2001-02 team captain placed first among the team’s blocked shots (11) leaders and was third in both made field goals (83) and rebounds (118). The lone senior on this season’s squad, Miller finished his career with 486 points and 310 rebounds in 95 career outings.

The Defensive Player Award was presented to freshman guard Carlton Epps. The 6-2 Epps ranked third among the conference’s steals leaders (2.42 spg) while recording Ferris’ eighth-best seasonal mark (58). He also placed seventh on the GLIAC’s offensive rebound chart (2.46 rpg) and was 29th overall on the NCAA Division II steals leaders list. Sophomore forward Nathan Wruble received the Coaches Award. Wruble scored 69 points and grabbed 108 rebounds while starting 18 games this campaign.

Ferris State recognized three GLIAC All-Academic selections in Wruble, junior guard/forward Jeff Guernsey and junior forward Doug Isanhart. Guernsey also received a Dean’s Award and the President’s Academic Award for recording the program’s highest cumulative grade point average. Captain’s Awards were presented to Miller and senior center Adam Anderson, who played in three contests and was averaging 15.3 points per game before suffering a season-ending injury during a 79-59 non-conference home win against Olivet (Mich.) College (Nov. 20). A 2001-02 Basketball Times Preseason Top 25 All-America selection, Anderson has applied for an extra season of eligibility through a medical redshirt and is expected to return for the 2002-03 campaign.

Ferris State concluded the 2001-02 season with a 4-22 overall mark including a seventh place 1-17 GLIAC North Division record under sixth-year head coach Edgar Wilson, who resigned on Feb. 28 and was replaced last week (April 23) by former FSU assistant coach Bill Sall. Anderson, Guernsey and Wallace have been named captains for the 2002-03 season.
