FERRIS' ANTHONY SYDNOR ATTAINS GLIAC AWARD HONORS
Freshman Guard Recognized For Outstanding Play Last Week
Ferris State University redshirt freshman guard Anthony Sydnor (Muskegon Heights) was honored Monday (Jan. 29) as this week's recipient of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Men's Basketball Player of the Week honor based on his performance in two games last week.
The 6-0 Sydnor tallied a team-high 20 points and dished out eight assists as the Bulldogs broke a three-game losing skid with an 81-78 league home win over Ashland last Thursday (Jan. 25). He then added a personal career-high and team-best 25 points along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals in FSU’s narrow 75-70 overtime loss Saturday (Jan. 27) versus nationally sixth-ranked Findlay. Sydnor shot 61.5% (16-26) from the floor in the two games and compiled 45 points, 10 assists, five rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. He averaged 22.5 points and five assists per game in the stretch.
Sydnor's recognition this week marks the first time a Bulldog men's basketball player has received the conference weekly honor this campaign. He was one of three Muskegon Heights players to start both games in the backcourt last week along with senior guard Julius Vines and sophomore guard Jessie York.
Prior to this past week, Sydnor had recorded 10 points or more in only three outings this season with a previous career-high of 11 points on two different occassions. His eight assists against Ashland topped the seven assists he recorded in FSU's 65-51 conference home triumph over Hillsdale (Jan. 6). All five of Sydnor's double-figure scoring outings this year have came in the last nine games to date.
Sydnor presently ranks as FSU's fifth-leading scorer (8.0 ppg) this season and is tied for the team-lead with 47 assists this year. He's also shooting 83% (34-41) from the free throw stripe in his initial collegiate campaign.
The Bulldogs, who are currently 6-14 overall and 4-7 in the GLIAC, will square off against Saginaw Valley State Wednesday, Jan. 31, in an 8 p.m. (EST) league road tilt at University Center, Mich. Ferris then hosts Northwood Saturday, Feb. 3, starting at 3 p.m. (EST) inside FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. Both of this week's games can be heard live locally on News Talk 1460 AM (WBRN) or on the internet at www.ferris.edu/sports.
