The Ferris State University softball team will open its 2006 season a day earlier than originally scheduled due to expected inclement weather conditions as the Bulldogs take to the diamond this Friday (Feb. 24) at the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (SIUE) Cougar Classic in Edwardsville, Ill.

Second-round action will be held this Saturday (Feb. 25) with Ferris scheduled to play twice each day. The tournament was originally slated to take place Feb. 25-26. All game results of the tourney will be available on the SIUE Athletics website at www.siue.edu/ATHLETIC/SB/.

Ferris State, under ninth-year head coach Keri Becker, will face Missouri Western this Friday (Feb. 24) in its season opener at 11 a.m. (CST) before going up against St. Joseph's (Ind.) in a 3 p.m. (CST) contest. The Bulldogs wrap up Cougar Classic play on Saturday (Feb. 25) with a 9 a.m. (CST) tilt versus Nebraska-Omaha followed by a 1 p.m. (CST) matchup against host SIUE.

The Bulldogs, who were chosen to finish second in the recently released 2006 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Softball Coaches Preseason Poll, were 31-20-0 overall and 13-7-0 in conference action last season. Ferris also captured the 2005 GLIAC Tournament title and claimed a share of the overall GLIAC Championship crown while making its fourth NCAA Division II Regional Tournament appearance.
