FERRIS STATE'S MIKE BROWN NAMED CCHA GOALTENDER OF THE WEEK
Ferris State University senior goaltender Mike Brown (Calgary, Alberta) has been selected this week's Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) Goaltender of the Week for his performance in this last weekend's (Oct. 29-30) CCHA home-and-home series split versus the nationally fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines as announced Monday (Nov. 1) by the league office.
Brown turned aside a combined 67-of-70 shots for a .957 save percentage and posted a 1.48 goals against average in 121:52 minutes of action for the two-game set. He recorded 33 saves and his school-record ninth career shutout with Saturday's (Oct. 30) 1-0 overtime triumph over the Wolverines at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Last season, Brown received league defensive player of the week kudos on one occasion (Dec. 21) after making 72 saves on 77 shots on net for a .935 saves percentage as the Bulldogs claimed the 15th annual Badger Hockey Showdown in Madison, Wis. He notched 38 saves in a 3-1 victory over Wisconsin in the tournament's championship contest (Dec. 28). For his efforts, Brown was chosen as the tourney's most outstanding player and was tabbed as the U.S. College Hockey Online's (USCHO) Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career.
An American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) First-Team All-America and a CCHA First-Team pick in the 2002-03 season, Brown was selected the CCHA's Defensive Player of the Week a league-record six times (Oct. 14, 21, 28, Nov. 4, 25 and March 3) en route to compiling a school-best 30-10-1 record as the Bulldogs registered their best season ever with a 31-10-1 overall mark while capturing their first-ever league regular-season championship title with a first-place 22-5-1 league record.
Brown, FSU's all-time winningest netminder with a 57-47-4 mark to date in 110 career games, currently ranks second among the school's career leaders in saves (2,909), goals against average (.910) and saves percentage (.910).
Ferris State, which is presently 2-6-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the CCHA, squares off against the Michigan State Spartans this weekend (Nov. 5-6) in a CCHA home-and-home series. This Friday's (Nov. 5) contest will take place at MSU's Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich., and will be televised live by FSN Detroit starting at 7:35 p.m. (EST). The two teams will then meet for the final time in the 2004-05 regular season Saturday (Nov. 6) at FSU's Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids with a 7:05 p.m. (EST) opening faceoff scheduled.
