Senior right wing Derrick McIver (Thunder Bay, Ontario) of the 2003-04 Ferris State University men’s ice hockey team has been named to the second team of the 2004 CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic District IV University Division Men’s At-Large Team in a recent (May 27) announcement. | Derrick McIver, a three-time league all-academic team honoree, was selected to the CoSIDA Academic District IV Second Team. |
A computer information systems major, McIver was among 10 individuals to land second-team recognition as four ice hockey student-athletes either garnered first or second-team accolades. Mike Kompon of Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green State’s D’Arcy McConvey both received first-team kudos while McIver was joined on the second team by Miami’s Derek Edwardson. All are representatives of Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA)-member institutions.
The District IV team is comprised of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve while carrying a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the CoSIDA members within each district. The CoSIDA Academic All-District Team is a part of the CoSIDA Academic All-America program and the first-team selections will now appear on the national ballot for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Men’s At-Large Team to be announced June 15.
McIver was a repeat (2002-03 and 2003-04) pick on the CCHA’s All-Academic Team this season after receiving league all-academic honorable mention plaudits in the 2001-02 campaign. The FSU captain also became a three-time (2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04) recipient of the program’s Scholar-Athlete Award for excellence in both the classroom and on the ice. He also earned for the third consecutive year both the Ferris State President’s and Dean’s Academic Awards as a result of boasting the team’s highest grade point average. McIver was named a co-winner of Ferris’ Blueline Competitive Award in 2001-02 after receiving the Bulldogs’ Rookie of the Year honor the previous (2000-01) season.
This season, the 6-1, 195-pound forward finished sixth in team scoring with 10 goals and assists apiece for 20 points in 38 games. His four multi-point game performances this winter ranked tied for sixth best among the squad’s leaders while his career-best three (3-0–3) short-handed points tied for second highest on the team. McIver’s best season occurred in 2001-02 when he totaled a career-high 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists in 36 outings. A former walk-on, McIver closed out his Bulldog career with 69 points on 31 goals and 38 assists to go with a +13 plus/minus efficiency rating and 13 multi-point game efforts in 144 contests.
Ferris State concluded the 2003-04 campaign at 15-20-3 overall with a 10-17-1 CCHA mark.
