DIAL UP SETTINGS
All shared dial-in users must authenticate with an Access ID issued by Telecommunications.

Dial-in users can connect by using Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Compressed Serial Line Internet Protocol (C-SLIP), or a terminal emulation program such as PROCOMM PLUS, Kermit, or VersaTerm. Terminal emulation users should set their communication settings to

8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit

Modems support the v.22bis (2400 bps), v.32 (9600 bps), v.32bis (14.4 Kbps), and at specified locations, v.34 (28.8 Kbps),v.90 (56 Kbps) Support of the v.fc standard varies with modem manufacturer and will not be officially supported on v.34 MichNet modems.

Modems support the error correction protocols v.42 and MNP4, as well as the data compression protocols v.42bis and MNP5.

The following settings are recommended for use with PPP and dial-in access numbers. SprintNet X.25 connections to MichNet do not support the PPP protocol.

Flow Control

CTS/RTS On
XON/XOFF Off
CTS/RTS flow control must be enabled in your modem and your modem cable must be able to pass CTS and RTS signals. Since XON/XOFF flow control may interfere with binary file transfers, it is not recommended.

DCE/DTE Speeds

DCE (phone line) speed DTE (computer port) speed 28,800 bps (v.34) 115,200 or 57,600 bps 14,400 bps (v.32bis) 57,600 or 38,400 bps 9,600 bps (v.32) 38,400 or 19,200 bps The DCE speed is negotiated to the highest reasonable speed by the modems, and is not usually set by the user. The v.34 standard supports a range of speeds: 28,800, 26,400, 24,000, 21,600, 19,200 Kbps. Since many phone lines are not of sufficient quality to support 28,800 Kbps, v.34 modems will often negotiate to a lower speed.

The DTE speed (computer port) should be set higher than the DCE (phone line) speed to take advantage of compression when using terminal emulation or PPP.

DTR Clearing

If you use a PC, set your modem to disconnect when the DTR (Data Terminal Ready) signal is cleared. If you use a Mac, configure your modem to ignore DTR. You can terminate your NAS connection by using Ctrl-D at the host: prompt.

gested Setup for Windows 95 Users

We recommend you use the built in Microsoft Internet Explorer that comes with Windows 95. Refer to the Dialer Setup section of this document for setting up the dialer. Once you have done this, then you can download Netscape from the Internet if you desire at www.netscape.com.
