Benefits of a Dial-in Access ID
A Dial-in account provides you with an identifier, called a userID, and a password which authorizes your dial-in connection to the internet. Your dial-in userID also allows you to access Internet hosts.
Network services available to dial-in account holders include:
- Remote login via telnet to internet hosts
- PPP dial-in access to numbers statewide
Dial-in accounts do not provide access to a Usenet News server nor do they provide
host services such as e-mail, login accounts, or disk space.
Further more, Telecommunications does not guarantee minimum connection time or connection at any particular time with this service.
Timeout Feature
Shared dial-in users are subject to time limits on their dial-in sessions. Ferris State University has a one hour time limit. Once that has been reached, your connection will be dropped. However, if using PPP, most browsers provide an easy reconnect.
Information about the time limit, if any, is returned at the start of a dial-in session. However some PPP clients and terminal emulators do not display the message. Others display the message only if the correct options are set. We are unable to notify users as they approach the end of their time limit. When the time limit is reached, the connection
drops without warning.
DIAL-IN SIGNUP
A Dial-in signup form is located in the back of this document or one can be picked up at the Telecommunications Department. The form must be completely filled out, signed and payment or a budget number must accompany the form. Once this is completed
and turned in, you will receive a dial-in ID and password through the U.S. mail within approximately one week. If you forget your password or think someone else has it, you will need to call the Department of Telecommunications at (231) 591-2901 and
request to have it changed.
A Dial-in signup form can be printed out from HERE
SUPPORT

contains tips and suggestions on configuring your browser to aid in your setup. If you require additional help, Telecommunications can provide you with a qualified service company. However, this service will require additional payment.
