Obtaining Service:
TelephoneServices are available to all employees. Campus, local and long distance capabilities are available upon request.
Telephone Move Worksheet:
If you are in need of a telephone or group of telephones to be moved, fill out the following Worksheet and send it over to Telecommunications via email or intercampus mail.
Billing Information:
Telecommunications processes billing monthly for administrative services. This includes TelephoneServices, data services, and other equipment services. For your convenience we offer online viewing of all long distance monthly telephone calls. If you would like to obtain access the view your budget codes online, please have a note from your dean or director sent to "Laura Donley"(lotus notes) listing your sis/frs/hrs login id and the budget codes you will need to view.
Collect And Third Party Calls:
No collect and/or third party calls may be accepted on any Ferris telephone. Also, no calls may be billed to any Ferris telephone number.
900 Service:
No 900 calls may be placed from the University telephone system.
Directory Assistance Charges:
Long distance information calls will be billed at a flat rate charge of $.45 per call for 231 directory assistance and $.75 per call for directory assistance outside of the 231 area. (These rates are subject to change.)
No caller is permitted to place a directory information call and request assistance in dialing the telephone number. If it is determined the call has been processed by Ameritech, AT&T or O.C.C. operator, charges will be billed with a surcharge and the per minute rate determined by the University.
Telephone Rates:
University telephone long distance rates are determined by Telecommunications and vary throughout the year. They are competitive with other vendors.
Local rates are charged at $.09 per minute.
Operator Services:
Ferris State University allows equal access to all long distance vendors for operator services including collect, calling card and person to person. This type of call can be made both from your departmental telephone and from payphones located on campus.

All campus telephones have direct inward dialed telephone numbers. For persons calling you, inform them your telephone number is 231 + 591 + 4 digit extension number.

Ferris switch board hours are 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday.
Repair Service . Dial "2901" and listen for appropriate repair needed
On-campus Calls:
Dial the last four digits of the number.
Local Calls:
Dial 86 + 7 digit number.
Directory Assistance:
Dial 87 + area code + 555-1212.
Long Distance:
Dial 87 + area code + 7 digit number.
International Calls:
Dial 87 + 011 + country code + city code + telephone number.
Calling Card, Collect, Person to Person:
Dial 87 + 0 + area code + 7 digit number. At the tone, key in your calling card number or wait for operator to respond.
Calling Card, International:
Dial 87 + 0 + country code + city code + telephone number.
For 800/888 Service:
Dial 87 + 800/888 + 7 digit number.
Warning To All Telephone Users:
Michigan State Law(Number 255 of House Bill 2319) in part reads as follows: "Any person who knowingly obtains or attempts to obtain TelephoneService or the transmission of a telephone message by the use of any false or fictitious telephone credit number or telephone number of another without the authority of the person to whom such credit number or telephone number was issued, is guilty of a misdemeanor. If the total value of TelephoneService obtained in a manner prohibited by this section exceeds $100.00 the offense shall by prosecuted as a felony."
Threatening, Obscene, Nuisance, Or Harassment Calls:
Michigan State Law (Public Act No. 328 of 1969) prohibits the use of telephone communication for these types of calls and provides that any person violating this statute may be imprisoned for not more than 6 months, or fined not more than $500.00 or both.
If you receive a call in any of the above categories, record the following information:
- The exact time of the call.
- The duration of the call.
- The telephone number on which you received the call.
- What was said by the caller.
- Any background noise, echoes, etc.
IMMEDIATELY REPORT THE ABOVE INFORMATION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY AT EXTENSION 5000.
Reporting Telephone Problems:
If you have any problems with your telephone, please dial "2901" for repair service. Listen to the menu for the appropriate option and leave the required information and a technician will process the repair(s) on University-owned equipment only, in the order the repair call is received.
