Patsy Eisler and her mother, Irene Johnson, awarded the Norris and Irene Johnson Scholarship to Ferris State University senior Georgette Kelley of Grand Blanc, Mich., during a luncheon held in Kelley's honor. Patsy and her husband, President of Ferris State University David L. Eisler, established the scholarship in honor of Patsy's mother and late father.
When University officials notified Kelley that she received the scholarship, she wondered how she would repay the kindness shown to her and continue the legacy that has been given to her by the Johnson family.
"At the luncheon I found out that the Johnson family has a rich heritage in education. I plan to return their kindness in the future by promoting character education in my classroom and one day providing a scholarship for an education student as well," said Kelley. "I believe that all students are capable to succeed, and I plan to encourage students to become life long learners."
Scholarship candidates must be a senior enrolled in Ferris' Teacher Education program, possess a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and provide a brief explanation of why they should be the scholarship recipient. Awarded scholarship funds will be the equivalent of the cost of in-state tuition.
"I was so pleased to see such a delightful, hard working, dedicated young woman receive the scholarship. It was so rewarding for both my mother and me to make Georgette's last semester at Ferris easier while she is completing her student teaching," said Eisler. "This scholarship is something my dad would have been very proud of."
